St Oliver Plunkett's GAA (Westmeath)
St Oliver Plunkett's Hurling Club is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Mullingar, County Westmeath, Ireland. The club is solely concerned with the game of hurling. History Located in the town of Mullingar, County Westmeath, St Oliver Plunkett's Hurling Club was founded on 5 April 1976. The club has spent most of its existence operating in the lower grades, winning five Westmeath IHC between 1994 and 2016. A brief period in the Westmeath SHC saw the club lose to Castletown Geoghegan in the 2013 final. St Oliver Plunkett's defeated Ringtown by 2-21 to 0-10 to win the Westmeath SBHC title in 2023. Mullingar
Mullingar ( ; ) is the county town of County Westmeath in Ireland. It is the third most populous town in the Midland Region, with a population of 20,928 in the 2016 census. The Counties of Meath and Westmeath Act 1543 proclaimed Westmeath a county, separating it from Meath. Mullingar became the administrative centre for County Westmeath. The town was originally named ''Maelblatha'', and takes its modern name from a mill noted in the legend of Colman of Mullingar. Traditionally a market town serving the large agricultural hinterland, Mullingar remains a significant commercial location. Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. The Westmeath Intermediate Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Slevin's Coaches Westmeath Intermediate Hurling Championship and abbreviated to the Westmeath IHC) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Westmeath County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association from 1985 for the third tier hurling teams in the county of Westmeath in Ireland. In its current format, the Westmeath Intermediate Hurling Championship begins with a group stage. The six participating teams play each other in a round-robin system. The three top-ranking teams proceed to the knockout phase that culminates with the final match at TEG Cusack Park. St Oliver Plunkett's is the most successful team in the tournament's history, having won it six times. Castletown Geoghegan is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Castletown Geoghegan, County Westmeath, Ireland. The club first fielded a championship team in 1920 and is almost exclusively concerned with the game of hurling. In senior hurling Castletown Geoghegan compete annually in the Westmeath Senior Hurling Championship, which they have won fourteen times as of 2022. The club also competes in various other championships in all grades within Westmeath. History Beginnings The first record of hurling being played in Castletown Geoghegan dates back to 1911 when games were played in Loughlum. These were not on an organized basis but soon after a Kilkenny man named Mick Byrne who worked with CIÉ at Castletown Station brought his skill and knowledge of hurling to the area.
