St Luke's Church, Borella
St Luke's Church is situated in the Borella district of Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka. The church plays an important role within the history of the Church Missionary Society (CMS) on the island and is prominent within the Anglican Church in Sri Lanka. Early history The Venerable Lorenz Beven, Archdeacon of Colombo noted that 'The development of Maradana in consequence of the establishment of hospitals in that area created the necessity for a Church. The first steps were taken at a meeting held on 5 October 1875 when it was decided to appeal for subscriptions. A piece of land nearly two acres in extent was acquired, the price paid being £300 per acre. The foundation was laid by the Reverend J. Ireland Jones on 8 October 1881 who also took the service of dedication on 30 June 1881. Sinhalese People
Sinhalese people ( si, සිංහල ජනතාව, Sinhala Janathāva) are an Indo-Aryan ethnolinguistic group native to the island of Sri Lanka. They were historically known as Hela people ( si, හෙළ). They constitute about 75% of the Sri Lankan population and number more than 16.2 million. The Sinhalese identity is based on language, cultural heritage and nationality. The Sinhalese people speak Sinhala, an insular Indo-Aryan language, and are predominantly Theravada Buddhists, although a minority of Sinhalese follow branches of Christianity and other religions. Cecil Horsley
Cecil Douglas Horsley (26 July 190610 March 1953) was a British Anglican bishop who served as Bishop of Colombo then of Gibraltar in the mid 20th century. He was born in Gillingham, Kent, on 26 July 1906 and educated at Brighton College and Queens' College, Cambridge, before embarking on an ecclesiastical career with curacies at Romsey Abbey and St Saviour's, Ealing. He was ordained priest on Trinity Sunday (15 June) 1930, by Theodore Woods, Bishop of Winchester, at Winchester Cathedral. After this he was vicar of St John the Evangelist, Upper Norwood, before his elevation to the episcopate in 1938. He was consecrated Bishop of Colombo on All Saints' Day (17 November) 1938, by Cosmo Lang, Archbishop of Canterbury, at Westminster Abbey. Easter Sunday Raid
The Easter Sunday Raid was an air attack on Colombo, Ceylon during the Indian Ocean raid by carrier-based aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy on 5 April 1942. The Japanese objective was to destroy the Ceylon-based British Eastern Fleet in harbour. The British preemptively dispersed shipping from the harbours before the attacks due to advance warning from intelligence in March 1942, and air reconnaissance during the raid. The attacking Japanese aircraft were met by fighters of the Royal Air Force's (RAF) 222 Group, commanded by Air Vice-Marshal John D'Albiac, and the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm (FAA), and anti-aircraft artillery. Port facilities were damaged, and ships both in harbour and - having dispersed - on the ocean were sunk or damaged. The bulk of the British Eastern Fleet was not found and survived. Swithin Winston Fernando was an Anglican Bishop of Colombo in Sri Lanka. An alumnus of Prince of Wales' College, Moratuwa he was the Archdeacon of Colombo in 1971 and consecrated Bishop of Colombo in January 1978. Douglas Meerwald
Earle Douglas (Dougie) Meerwald was a pioneering Ceylonese musician. Dougie Meerwald was the vocalist of one of the leading Ceylonese swing and dance bands of the early 1950s - The Manhattans. Western popular music and dance band music was all the rage in South Asia after World War II and Ceylon was no exception. In his youth Douglas Meerwald was a promising young cricketer carving a name for himself with the 1st XI team of Carey College Colombo. However Meerwald did not pursue cricket, his first love was music so he joined Don Daniel and the Ballroom Hornets and subsequently The Manhattans dance band. Neville Jayaweera
Neville Jayaweera (23 October 1930 - 10 May 2020) was a member of the Ceylon Civil Service (1955-1972). He was handpicked by the Prime Minister of Ceylon, Dudley Senanayake, to be both Chairman and Director-General of the Ceylon Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in 1967. Jayaweera drafted the legislation for setting up the CBC and headed the new Corporation for three years. Under his leadership the Ceylon Broadcasting Corporation followed very strictly the values and ethics of public service broadcasting. The CBC is now known as the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. Early history Neville Jayaweera was born to Robert and Constance Jayaweera in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on 23 October 1930; the third of four siblings – Stanley, Sheila and Beryl.
