St Leonards, East Kilbride
St Leonards is an area of the Scottish new town East Kilbride, in South Lanarkshire. St Leonards is a residential area on the east side of the town. The majority of the area's streets are named after Glens, Islands, Rivers and Lochs from Scotland, for instance: Loch Shin, Loch Assynt, Glen Carron, Glen Tanner, Inch Murrin, Benbecula and Skye. About 39 streets are named after Glens of Scotland, 20 after Scottish Islands, 12 after Lochs and 7 after Scottish Rivers. St Leonards is well known for its red brick terraced houses in the Calderglen area, which can be seen from St Leonards Road approaching High Common Road. East Kilbride
East Kilbride (; gd, Cille Bhrìghde an Ear ) is the largest town in South Lanarkshire in Scotland and the country's sixth-largest locality by population. It was also designated Scotland's first new town on 6 May 1947. The area lies on a raised plateau to the south of the Cathkin Braes, about southeast of Glasgow and close to the boundary with East Renfrewshire. The town ends close to the White Cart Water to the west and is bounded by the Rotten Calder Water to the east. Calderglen High School (Scottish Gaelic: ''Àrd-sgoil Ghlinn Challdair'') is a state-run secondary school in the St Leonards area of the Scottish new town East Kilbride, in South Lanarkshire. The complex of buildings is situated on the precipitous bank of the Rotten Calder Water, overlooking a meander named the 'School Bend'. The school derives its name from the Calder Glen (gorge) which the river occupies, which is a site of special scientific interest (SSSI). The school has a pupil roll of approximately 1800, with 130 teachers, making it one of the largest secondary institutions in Europe. The school's houses are named Cameron, Torrance and Struthers. The school was established after the merger of Hunter High School and Claremont High School. Calderglen occupies the site of the former Claremont High, and was opened on 18 February 2008. Claremont High School (East Kilbride)
Claremont High School was a non-denominational, state-funded secondary school based in the St Leonards area of East Kilbride. It closed in June 2007 and merged with Hunter High School to form the new Calderglen High School, although Calderglen met in the Claremont building until February 2008 when the new building opened on the same site. It was originally one of six state Secondary schools in East Kilbride until, after a school modernisation program by South Lanarkshire Council, they were merged into three schools. Studio32 Theatre Company A teachers' strike in 1985 led to the establishment of Studio32 by Liane McKenna and Vikki England née Carrick, an amateur theatre company that has since grown to be the leading community theatre company in the area. Hunter High School, East Kilbride
__NOTOC__ Hunter High School was a non-denominational secondary school which served the Calderwood, East Mains and parts of the St Leonards and Stewartfield areas of the new town of East Kilbride from 1963 to 2007. The school started as a four-year Secondary school and was extended in 1966 prior to amalgamation with the old East Kilbride Village school to form a full six-year Comprehensive. In 2008, it merged with Claremont High School to form the new Calderglen High School. South Lanarkshire Council Election, 2012
Elections to South Lanarkshire Council took place on 3 May 2012 on the same day as the 31 other Scottish local government elections. Labour retained their position as the largest party on the council as they gained three seat from 2007 but were one seat short of an overall majority. The Scottish National Party (SNP) also increased their representation and remained in second place on the authority after gaining four seats to hold 28. The Conservatives lost the majority of their seats as they fell from eight to three. One less independent candidate was elected with two returned and the remaining seat was won by the Liberal Democrats who lost one seat.
