St John's Cathedral, Hong Kong
The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Evangelist is the cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of Hong Kong Island, and mother church to the Province of Hong Kong and Macao. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Hong Kong and the Bishop of Hong Kong Island. At Garden Road, Central, the cathedral is located in a prime central position, surrounded by the Bank of China Tower, Cheung Kong Center, HSBC Building, Court of Final Appeal Building, Former Central Government Offices, and the Former French Mission Building. St John's Cathedral is one of the five cathedrals in Hong Kong. The others are Holy Trinity Cathedral (Anglican), All Saints' Cathedral (Anglican), St Luke Orthodox Cathedral (Eastern Orthodox), and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (Roman Catholic). Garden Road, Hong Kong
Garden Road is a major road on Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong, connecting the Central and Mid-Levels areas. It was formerly known as Albany Nullah. At its lower (Central) end, Garden Road forms a grade-separated intersection with Queensway. For most of its length, Garden Road carries traffic only in the downhill direction. Uphill traffic is carried by Cotton Tree Drive, parallel to and to the east of Garden Road. Cotton Tree Drive merges with Garden Road just above the intersection with Upper Albert Road, and Garden Road continues uphill to an intersection with Robinson Road and Magazine Gap Road in the Mid-Levels. Garden Road is rich in historical and heritage value. Former French Mission Building
The Former French Mission Building is a declared monument located on Government Hill at 1, Battery Path, Central, Hong Kong. It housed the Court of Final Appeal of Hong Kong from 1 July 1997 to 6 September 2015.Antiquities and Monuments OfficeFormer French Mission Building Features The building is built on a podium due to the hilly nature of Government Hill. Originally a mansion called Johnston House, the building was altered in the 1870s and 1880s to a three-storey building. The present three-storey building opened in 1917 as the result of a major renovation, also described as an "extensive rebuilding", of the previous structure. The building is probably based on a previous structure near the site known as "Beaconsfield", but it is clad in red brick rather than an all white facade. Freehold (law)
In common law jurisdictions such as England and Wales, Australia, Canada, and Ireland, a freehold is the common mode of ownership of real property, or land, and all immovable structures attached to such land. It is in contrast to a leasehold, in which the property reverts to the owner of the land after the lease period expires or otherwise lawfully terminates. Peter Kwong (bishop)
Peter Kwong Kong-kit (; born 28 February 1936) was the first Primate of the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui (i.e. the Anglican Church), Archbishop of Hong Kong and Bishop of the Diocese of Hong Kong Island following the establishment of the Anglican Communion's Province of Hong Kong after the Handover. He was the first Chinese bishop of the diocese of Hong Kong and Macao. Kwong was the chaplain of Chung Chi College and lectured at the Chinese University of Hong Kong until he was appointed diocesan secretary in 1979. In 1981 he became the Bishop of Hong Kong and Macao; he was consecrated a bishop on 25 March 1981 at St John's Cathedral (Hong Kong); his diocese was split in order to create the new church Province of Hong Kong, and the portion he retained became the Diocese of Hong Kong Island (and he the Bishop of Hong Kong Island). William Morris
William Morris (24 March 1834 – 3 October 1896) was a British textile designer, poet, artist, novelist, architectural conservationist, printer, translator and socialist activist associated with the British Arts and Crafts Movement. Alaric Rose
Alaric Pearson Rose was Dean of Hong Kong from 1941 until 1952. Rose was born 26 September 1909 in Lye and Stourbridge, England. He was educated at St Edmund Hall, Oxford and ordained in 1933. After a curacy in Gateshead he was Chaplain at St. John's Cathedral, Hong Kong until his appointment as Dean; and Canon Residentiary afterwards. Rose was appointed as the first full-time philosophy lecturer at the University of Hong Kong in 1952 (HKU Council Minutes, 22 May 1952, 7), and often acted as Head of Department. He retired from the university in 1961. Pearl Harbor is an American lagoon harbor on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, west of Honolulu. George Smith (; 19 June 181514 December 1871) was a missionary in China and the Bishop of Victoria (the Anglican bishop in Hong Kong) from 1849 to 1865, the first of this newly established diocese. Life Smith was born in Wellington, Somerset on 19 June 1815. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in classics from Magdalen Hall, Oxford in 1837 (and a Master of Arts in 1843 and Doctor of Divinity in 1849) and was ordained in the Church of England. He was made deacon on 20 October 1839 by George Davys, Bishop of Peterborough and ordained priest in July 1840 by Charles Longley, Bishop of Ripon. He rapidly became involved in the Church Missionary Society and he and fellow priest Thomas McClatchie arrived in Shanghai on 25 September 1844 to establish a mission.
