St James' Church, West Derby, Liverpool
St James' Church is in Mill Lane, West Derby, a suburb of Liverpool, Merseyside, England. It was an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of West Derby, the archdeaconry of Liverpool, and the diocese of Liverpool until 23 June 2019 when responsibility was handed over to the Indian Orthodox Church. Its benefice is united with that of St Mary, West Derby. The church is designated by English Heritage as a Grade II listed building. History The church was designed by Edward Welch and built in 1845–46. The original short chancel was replaced by a larger one by W. and J. Hay in 1875–76, and at the same time a south organ chamber, a north vestry, and a semicircular structure to the south of the tower, providing a staircase to the tower and new steps to the gallery, were added. West Derby ( ) is an affluent suburb of Liverpool, England. It is located East of the city and is also a Liverpool City Council ward. At the 2011 Census, the population was 14,382. Edward Holmes Jewitt
Edward Holmes Jewitt (1849–1929) was a Pre-Raphaelite artist working in stained glass and other media. He was one of the two chief designers, along with Carl Almquist, for the Lancaster firm of Shrigley and Hunt, producers of stained-glass windows and church-fittings. In recent years his work has begun to be studied and admired, though claims that he was a genius have not gone uncontested. Carl Almquist
Carl Almquist (1848 – 1924) was a Swedish-born stained-glass artist whose professional life was spent entirely in Britain. He was a pupil of Henry Holiday and became one of the two chief designers for the well-known Lancaster firm of Shrigley and Hunt. He was in large measure responsible for establishing their late Pre-Raphaelite or Aesthetic style. Though largely neglected by 20th-century art historians he has more recently been acclaimed as a genius, and as one of the leading late-Victorian stained-glass designers. Within church architecture, orientation is an arrangement by which the point of main interest in the interior is towards the east ( la, oriens).
