St Ib's Church, Roskilde
St Ib's Church ( da, Sankt Ibs Kirke) is a Romanesque church in Roskilde on the Danish island of Zealand. It was first mentioned in 1291. The church was once richly decorated with frescos. History and architecture Located on a small rise between Roskilde Fjord and the old town, the church is built on a site where there was originally a wooden church which was revealed in archaeological digs in the 1980s and 1990s. It is unclear when it was founded but it certainly existed in the 11th century. Between 1100 and 1150, the wooden church was pulled down to be replaced by a Romanesque stone church. It was built of travertine limestone in about 1100 and originally consisted of a nave and a chancel with flat ceilings, extending over a length of . In the 13th century, six tall slender windows were added as well as a tower and a porch. The flat ceiling was replaced by vaults. Church Frescos In Denmark
Church frescos or church wall paintings (Danish: ''kalkmalerier'') are to be found in some 600 churches across Denmark, no doubt representing the highest concentration of surviving church murals anywhere in the world. Most of them date back to the Middle Ages and were uncovered by Jacob Kornerup (1825–1913) who carried out restoration work in 80 churches across the country towards the end of the 19th century. They lay hidden for centuries as after the reformation, they were covered with limewash (Danish: ''kalk'') only to be revealed and restored during the course of the 19th and 20th centuries. In most of Europe medieval frescos, extremely common in the Middle Ages, were more likely to be removed completely during the Reformation or in subsequent rebuildings, or merely as they aged. Sigrid Kähler
Sigrid Kähler, also Sigrid Andersen Ring, (12 May 1874 – 9 May 1923) was a Danish ceramist and painter. Through her father, the ceramist Herman A. Kähler, she met the painter L. A. Ring. After their marriage in 1896, she inspired many of his works. Although she spent most of her time as a mother and housewife, she continued to paint occasionally and decorated ceramics. Her work together with that of her husband was exhibited in Ordrupgaard in 2017. Early life Born in Næstved on 12 May 1874, Sigrid Kähler was the eldest of the six children of the ceramist Herman August Kähler (1846–1917) and Jansine Elisabeth Christine Berg (1848–1901). The others were Herman Hans Christian (1876), Hedevig (1878), Ebba (1880), Elisabeth (1882) and Stella (1886). She learnt to paint in her father's workshop where she decorated ceramics. Romanesque Architecture
Romanesque architecture is an architectural style of medieval Europe characterized by semi-circular arches. There is no consensus for the beginning date of the Romanesque style, with proposals ranging from the 6th to the 11th century, this later date being the most commonly held.
