St Bartholomew's Chapel, Żurrieq
The Chapel of St Bartholomew is a Baroque Roman Catholic chapel located in Żurrieq, Malta. History The original chapel of St Bartholomew was built in the year 1482. It was one of the churches which the apostolic administrator inquisitor Pietro Dusina visited during his apostolic visit in 1575. Dusina reported that the church was in very good state and was equipped with all necessary things to function as a church however it lacked a rector and an income. The feast of St Bartholomew was celebrated every year with vespers and a mass, with expenses paid by Mikiel Magion. However the chapel was abandoned and by the year 1658, the Bishop of Malta Miguel Juan Balaguer Camarasa deconsecrated the chapel and ordered it closed. A new church was built instead of the old one in 1775 and was blessed by the parish priest of Żurrieq Reverend Ġużepp Agius on January 11, 1784. Żurrieq
Żurrieq ( mt, Iż-Żurrieq ) is a town in the Southern Region of Malta. It is one of the oldest towns in the country, and it has a population of 11,823 inhabitants as of March 2014. The first documentation about it being a parish dates back to 1436 dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria. The island of Filfla is administratively a part of the town. The town stretches from in Nigret to Ħal Far respectively in old times the town was a border with Żejtun. There are a number of villages forming part of Żurrieq. Żurrieq is part of the Fifth political District and votes for the local council every five years. The council is made up of nine members, one of them is the Mayor of the town. Charles Scicluna
Charles Jude Scicluna (born 15 May 1959) is a Canadian-Maltese prelate of the Roman Catholic Church who has been the Archbishop of Malta since 2015. He held positions in the Roman Curia from 1995 to 2012, when he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Malta. Both as a curial official and since becoming a bishop he has conducted investigations into sexual abuse by clergy on behalf of the Holy See and led a board that reviews such cases. He has been called "the Vatican's most respected sex crimes expert". Since November 2018 he has also been an Adjunct Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the curial body responsible for dealing with clerical sexual abuse cases on minors around the world. Pietro Dusina
Pietro Dusina was an Italian Roman Catholic priest from Brescia who was the inquisitor and apostolic delegate to Malta between 1574 and 1575. Dusina was nominated inquisitor of Malta by Pope Gregory XIII on 3 July 1574, and he arrived on the island on 1 August of the same year. Prior to Dusina's appointment, the Bishop of Malta had held inquisitorial authority, but disputes between Grand Master Jean de la Cassière and Bishop Martín Royas de Portalrubio led to the Pope's nomination of Dusina as inquisitor. On 28 January 1575, the Pope confirmed Dusina's role as apostolic visitor to Malta. La Cassière offered Dusina the former Castellania in Birgu to house his official residence as well as the tribunal of the inquisition. The building had been vacant for some years, and Dusina was temporarily accommodated at Fort Saint Elmo in Valletta and later the Dominican convent in Birgu before settling in the Castellania. Miguel Juan Balaguer de Camarasa also known as Miguel Balaguer or Michele Balaguer (1597 – 5 December 1663) was a Spanish Roman Catholic prelate who served as Bishop of Malta from 1635 to 1663. Biography Miguel Juan Balaguer Camarasa was born in Camarasa, in Spain. Upon the death of Bishop Baldassare Cagliares, Grandmaster Antoine de Paule and the council recommended that Balaguer be appointed bishop of Malta. Pope Urban VIII accepted Balaguer's nomination and formally appointed him to the see of Malta on February 12, 1635. He was ordained bishop on February 18, 1635 and installed as Bishop of Malta on March 25, 1635. During his episcopacy Balaguer donated a wooden crucifix by Innocenzo da Petralia Soprano (1592-1648), a Franciscan friar from Sicily which today is found in the Chapel of the Holy Crucifix in St. Paul's Cathedral, Mdina.
