St. Patrick's Day (album)
''St. Patrick's Day'' is a compilation album of phonograph records by Bing Crosby released in 1947 featuring songs with an Irish theme. This includes one of Crosby's most-beloved songs, "Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ral" which was number four on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 for 12 weeks, and topped the Australian charts for an entire month, on shellac disc record. This version, the 1945 re-recording, was released earlier in another Crosby album, ''Selections from Going My Way''. "Dear Old Donegal" is an Irish-American song popularised by American singer Bing Crosby and written by Steve Graham. The song has an 'upbeat' rhythm and is meant to be the words of a poor Irishman who has to leave his homeland to go to United States, however, he gets to return to his native County Donegal after becoming successful in the United States. ''Dear Old Donegal'' was also performed by Judy Garland, Zina Bethune, and Vic Damone as part of the ''All-Purpose Holiday Medley'' on ''The Judy Garland Show'' in 1963. It was parodied by Allan Sherman on his 1962 album ''My Son, the Folk Singer'', as "Shake Hands With Your Uncle Max", using Jewish references rather than Irish. "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen" is a popular song written by Thomas Paine Westendorf (1848-1923) in 1875. (The music is loosely based on Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E Flat Minor Opus 64 Second Movement). In spite of its German-American origins, it is widely mistaken to be an Irish ballad. Westendorf, born in Virginia of German parents, was then teaching at the reform school known as the Indiana House of Refuge for Juvenile Offenders in Hendricks County, Indiana. He wrote it for his wife (who was, however, named Jennie), who had made a visit to her home state of New York due to homesickness. It's in the form of an "answer" to a popular ballad of the time, "Barney, Take Me Home Again," composed by Westendorf’s close friend, George W. Brown, writing under the nom de plume of George W. James Royce Shannon (May 13, 1881 – May 19, 1946), born James Royce, was a nationally prominent Irish-American composer and lyricist. He was active at the time of Tin Pan Alley. Biography He was born in Adrian, Michigan. He is known chiefly for writing the lyrics to " The Missouri Waltz" (the state song of Missouri) and for composing the song "Too Ra Loo Ra Loo Ral" ("Irish Lullaby"). Chauncey Olcott, born John Chancellor Olcott and often spelled Chauncey Alcott, (July 21, 1858 – March 18, 1932) was an American stage actor, songwriter and singer of Irish descent. Biography He was born in Buffalo, New York. His mother, Margaret (née Doyle), was a native of Killeagh, County Cork. In the early years of his career Olcott sang in minstrel shows, before studying singing in London during the 1880s. Lillian Russell played a major role in helping make him a Broadway star. "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" is a lighthearted song in tribute to Ireland. Its lyrics were written by Chauncey Olcott and George Graff, Jr., set to music composed by Ernest Ball, for Olcott's production of ''The Isle O' Dreams'', and Olcott sang the song in the show. John Scott Trotter Jr. (June 14, 1908 – October 29, 1975), also known as "Uncle John", was an American arranger, composer and orchestra leader. Trotter was best known for conducting the John Scott Trotter Orchestra which backed singer and entertainer Bing Crosby on record and on his radio programs from 1937 to 1954. "The Rose of Tralee" is a nineteenth-century Irish people, Irish ballad about a woman called Mary, who because of her beauty was called ''The Rose of Tralee''. The Rose of Tralee (festival), Rose of Tralee International Festival had been inspired by the ballad.
