St. Otteran's Hospital
St. Otteran's Hospital ( ga, Ospidéal Naomh Otteran) is a psychiatric hospital in Waterford, County Waterford, Ireland. History The hospital, which was designed by Francis Johnston and William Murphy, opened as the Waterford Asylum in 1835. It became Waterford Mental Hospital in the 1920s and went on to become St. Otteran's Hospital in the 1950s. The Health Service Executive (HSE) ( ga, Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte) is the publicly funded healthcare system in Ireland, responsible for the provision of health and personal social services. Francis Johnston (architect)
Francis Johnston (1760 – 14 March 1829) was an Irish architect, best known for building the General Post Office (GPO) on O'Connell Street, Dublin. Life Johnston was born in Armagh, Ireland, son of William Johnston, also an architect, and studied architecture. He practised in Armagh, and then lived in Drogheda from 1786 before moving to Dublin about 1793. In 1805, he was appointed to the Board of Works as an architect. In 1824 he was made president of the Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts which had been founded the previous year, and he provided headquarters for the academy in Lower Abbey Street at his own expense. Deinstitutionalisation
Deinstitutionalisation (or deinstitutionalization) is the process of replacing long-stay psychiatric hospitals with less isolated community mental health services for those diagnosed with a mental disorder or developmental disability. In the late 20th century, it led to the closure of many psychiatric hospitals, as patients were increasingly cared for at home, in halfway houses and clinics, in regular hospitals, or not at all. Deinstitutionalisation works in two ways. The first focuses on reducing the population size of mental institutions by releasing patients, shortening stays, and reducing both admissions and readmission rates.
