St. Mary's Medical Center (SMMC) is a hospital in San Francisco, California, US. It is currently operated by Dignity Health. History SMMC is the oldest continuously operating hospital in San Francisco. St. Mary's Hospital was opened on July 27, 1857 by the Sisters of Mercy. Prior to this, the sisters had operated the first County hospital in San Francisco, the Stockton Street Hospital. The Sisters of Mercy is a religious institute of Catholic women founded in 1831 in Dublin, Ireland, by Catherine McAuley. As of 2019, the institute had about 6200 sisters worldwide, organized into a number of independent congregations. They also started many education and health care facilities around the world.
