St. Mary's High School (Perth Amboy, New Jersey)
St. Mary's High School was a private, Roman Catholic high school in Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. History St. Mary's Church was established in 1844 to serve the Irish Catholics who had settled in Perth Amboy. A grammar school was established in 1852, followed by St. Mary High School in 1923, both staffed by the Sisters of Mercy. St. Mary's High School closed in 1981 in the wake of declining enrollment. The grammar school remained open and staffed by the Sisters of Mercy until 1986, when it was merged into Perth Amboy Catholic School. Notable alumni * Thomas J. WFAN (660 AM) is a commercial radio station licensed to New York, New York, carrying a sports radio format known as "Sports Radio 66 AM and 101.9 FM" or "The Fan". Ruth White (actress)
Ruth Patricia White (April 24, 1914December 3, 1969) was an American actress who worked in theatre, film, and television. She won Emmy and Obie awards, and was a Tony Award nominee. Early years A lifelong resident of Perth Amboy, New Jersey, White was of Irish Catholic descent. She attended St. Mary's High School and graduated with a bachelor's degree in literature from New Jersey College for Women, now Douglass Residential College, Rutgers University in 1935. While pursuing her acting career in nearby New York City, she taught acting and drama at Seton Hall University. During this period, she also studied acting with Maria Ouspenskaya. Early career White began her acting career in 1940 as an apprentice at the Cape May Playhouse. Late in World War II, she spent six months in Alaska and the Aleutians touring with a USO troupe. New Jersey's 4th congressional district is a congressional district that stretches along the New Jersey Shore. It has been represented by Republican Chris Smith since 1981, the second-longest currently serving member of the US House of Representatives and the longest serving member of Congress from New Jersey in history.
