St. Joseph's Church, Hong Kong
St. Joseph's Church is a Catholic Church in Garden Road on the Mid-levels, Victoria City, Hong Kong officiated and blessed on 20 November 1872. It was among the three remaining Catholic churches in the colony during the time; the others being the Immaculate Conception Cathedral and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. It was established by Bishop Timoleon Raimondi, the last prefect and the first vicar apostolic of the colony. The construction of the church was attributed to the dedication and efforts of many parties, including the Hong Kong Government, local Christian communities as well as the Jewish agencies. Garden Road, Hong Kong
Garden Road is a major road on Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong, connecting the Central and Mid-Levels areas. It was formerly known as Albany Nullah. At its lower (Central) end, Garden Road forms a grade-separated intersection with Queensway. For most of its length, Garden Road carries traffic only in the downhill direction. Uphill traffic is carried by Cotton Tree Drive, parallel to and to the east of Garden Road. Cotton Tree Drive merges with Garden Road just above the intersection with Upper Albert Road, and Garden Road continues uphill to an intersection with Robinson Road and Magazine Gap Road in the Mid-Levels. Cathedral Of The Immaculate Conception (Hong Kong)
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception () is a late 19th-century English Gothic revival church that serves as the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong. It is located in the Mid-Levels area of the city at 16 Caine Road. Groundbreaking and construction of the cathedral began in 1883 after the previous cathedral, on Wellington Street, was destroyed by fire. Built from brick and stone, the new cathedral was designed by the London-based architectural firm Crawley and Company. The church opened on 7 December 1888, the day before the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and was consecrated in 1938. Three years later, it was damaged during the Battle of Hong Kong, but remained untouched throughout the subsequent Japanese occupation of Hong Kong. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church () is a Roman Catholic church in the Diocese of Hong Kong. It is located in the Wanchai district at 1 Star Street. The church is unique being located within a private multi-storey residential building, rather than a stand-alone structure. The current parish priest is Rev. Thomas Law Kwok-Fai. History The current church situated in the historical site of St. Francis Xavier Chapel, which was the place of worship for Catholic faithful in the Wanchai area as early as 1845. There were religious communities, Catholic hospital, and homes for abandoned babies and blind women. As the number of faithful grew, the parish priest, Father James Zilioli, and the Wanchai faithful were determined to build a new church. Timoleon Raimondi
Timoleon Raimondi (5 May 1827 – 27 September 1894) () was the Last Prefect and First Vicar Apostolic of Hong Kong (17 November 1874). Raimondi was born in Milan, Italy. He was the younger brother of Antonio Raimondi, a prominent naturalist who worked in Peru. Timoleon was ordained as a priest on 25 May 1850. He was appointed as prefect of Hong Kong in Hong Kong on 27 December 1868. 1874 Hong Kong Typhoon
The 1874 Hong Kong Typhoon was the third-worst typhoon to ever hit Hong Kong, striking during the night of September 22, 1874 and the morning of September 23, 1874. Meteorological history The Colony experienced a period of low pressure, typical of the eye of a typhoon. From 08:00 PM, winds raged and howled with ear-deafening sounds, alongside the painful cries of many people who had become homeless. The typhoon increased in strength steadily up to 02:15 AM on September 23. Modern analysis in 2017 indicated that this great typhoon passed approximately 50 to 60 km to the south of Hong Kong at its closest approach, similar to Hato in 2017.
