St. John's Beacon
St Johns Beacon (also known as the Radio City Tower) is a radio and observation tower in Liverpool, England. Designed by James A. Roberts Associates, it was built in 1969 and opened by Queen Elizabeth II. The tower is tall, and is the second-tallest free-standing structure in Liverpool. It has a long antenna on the roof, making it the tallest structure in Liverpool when antennas are included. As testament to the importance of its design, which was described by Historic England as "embodying the technological bravura and spirit of the space age", the building was listed at Grade II in November 2020. The tower has served as the base of the local commercial radio station Hits Radio Liverpool (formerly Radio City) since 2000. BBC Radio Merseyside is the BBC's local radio station serving Merseyside. It broadcasts on FM, DAB, digital TV and via BBC Sounds, from studios on Hanover Street in Liverpool. According to RAJAR, the station has a weekly audience of 203,000 listeners and a 6.8% share as of September 2022. History BBC Radio Merseyside was the third BBC Local Radio station to start broadcasting, launching on 22 November 1967 and broadcasting from the sixth floor of council-owned offices in Commerce House, Liverpool. Wire FM
Wire FM was an Independent Local Radio station serving the Warrington, Widnes and Runcorn areas of Cheshire. Following its sale to Bauer Radio, the station was closed and merged with the Greatest Hits Radio network in September 2020. History Wire FM's origins began in 1990 when two presenters at Warrington's hospital radio station, Stephen Cooper and Philip Houltby, decided to run an RSL station for the town. Cooper had previous RSL experience via Waves AM in Peterhead. The station was duly organised and went on air as Warrington Festival of Music Radio (WFMR) for two weeks in May 1991. Bauer City 3 was a network of 12 popular mainstream music radio stations in Scotland and northern England, owned and operated by Bauer Radio. Overview From Monday 19 January 2015, The Hits on DAB was absorbed into the new Bauer City 3 network of stations. The new services were locally branded and identified, with the opportunity to split for individual local news, information, advertising and jingles, with The Hits content as a national programme feed.
