St. James's Gate F.C.
St James's Gate Football Club is an Irish association football club based in Drimnagh/Crumlin, Dublin. They played in the League of Ireland between 1921–22 and 1943–44 and again from 1990–91 until 1995–96. Gate were the inaugural winners of both the League of Ireland and the FAI Cup. Like several fellow early League of Ireland clubs, such as Fordsons, Jacobs, Midland Athletic and Dundalk, Gate had their origins as a factory or works team. They were initially the football team of the St James's Gate Brewery, the home of Guinness. In July 2022 they narrowly survived folding and survived due to a public appeal. Iveagh Grounds
The Iveagh Grounds is a multi-purpose sports facility based in Drimnagh/Crumlin, Dublin. It is the home base of several sports clubs and teams who are associated with the Guinness Athletic Union. These include St James's Gate F.C. and St James Gaels GAA. It is named after Edward Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh, who purchased the site and then donated it to the union. Other clubs that play at the Iveagh Grounds include a field hockey club and a rugby union club. As well as St James's Gate F.C., two other association football clubs, Bangor Celtic F.C. and St. John Bosco F.C., also play home games at the Iveagh Grounds. In 2017 Trinity College Dublin purchased the grounds for €2 million. St James's Gate Brewery
St. James's Gate Brewery is a brewery founded in 1759 in Dublin, Ireland, by Arthur Guinness. The company is now a part of Diageo, a company formed from the merger of Guinness and Grand Metropolitan in 1997. The main product of the brewery is Draught Guinness. Originally leased in 1759 to Arthur Guinness at £45 per year for 9,000 years, the St. James's Gate area has been the home of Guinness ever since. It became the largest brewery in Ireland in 1838, and the largest in the world by 1886, with an annual output of 1.2 million barrels. Although no longer the largest brewery in the world, it remains as the largest brewer of stout. The company has since bought out the originally leased property, and during the 19th and early 20th centuries, the brewery owned most of the buildings in the surrounding area, including many streets of housing for brewery employees, and offices associated with the brewery. The Leinster Senior League is an association football league organised by the Leinster Football Association. In 2015–16 the Leinster Senior League operated twenty divisions. It also organises various cup competitions. Its Senior Division is a third level division in the Republic of Ireland football league system. The Leinster Senior Cup is an association football cup competition organized by the Leinster Football Association. It is currently contested by LFA affiliated League of Ireland clubs, Leinster Senior League Senior Division clubs and invited teams from the various LFA affiliated junior leagues. Before the introduction of the FAI Cup, it was considered the major cup competition for clubs in what is now the Republic of Ireland. It is also the oldest association football cup competition in the Republic of Ireland. Ernie MacKay
Ernest MacKay (7 October 1896 – November 1995) was an Irish footballer who played in an international tournament representing Ireland in 1924. Personal life MacKay was born in Tipperary as the second son and fifth child of John and Mary Elizabeth MacKay. As a child, he lived at the Curragh Camp in County Kildare in Ireland before moving to Oxmantown Road in Dublin. When the 1916 Easter Uprising broke out, MacKay remained in Ireland where he was employed as a telegram boy for the General Post Office in Dublin. He began playing football and joined the St James Gate Football Club, where he was part of the team that won the League of Ireland in 1921 and 1922. MacKay was also a member of the Irish Free State football team that competed in the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. Paddy Duncan
Paddy Duncan (1894 – 9 April 1949) was an Irish association football, footballer. At the Ireland at the 1924 Summer Olympics, 1924 Olympic Games he scored the Republic of Ireland national football team, Ireland (FAI)'s first ever goal in a senior international. Charlie Dowdall
Charles Dowdall (7 April 1898 – 7 November 1987) was an Irish footballer. He played for several clubs in both the League of Ireland and the English League and was also capped at international level by Ireland. He was born in Dublin. Club career In 1922 Dowdall was a member of the St James's Gate team that won the first ever League of Ireland title and the first ever FAI Cup. During the FAI Cup final against Shamrock Rovers, his skirmishes with Bob Fullam helped provoke post-match disturbances involving players and supporters. Together with Paddy Duncan, Thomas Murphy, Ernest MacKay and Michael Farrell, Dowdall was one of five players from St James's Gate, included in the Irish Free State squad for the 1924 Olympic Games. Leinster Senior League Senior Division
The Leinster Senior League Senior Division is the top division of the Leinster Senior League. It is organized by the Leinster Football Association. Together with the Munster Senior League Senior Premier Division and the Ulster Senior League Senior Division, it forms the third level of the Republic of Ireland football league system. Formed in 1896, it is the oldest association football league in what is now the Republic of Ireland. Shelbourne have won the most titles. However, in more recent seasons Crumlin United, Cherry Orchard, Wayside Celtic and Bangor Celtic have been the divisions strongest teams. In 2014–15 Bluebell United were Leinster Senior League champions, 27 years after winning their previous title.
