St. James' Church, Nallur
St. James' Church is a Church of Ceylon church located in Nallur in northern Sri Lanka. History In 1817 the Anglican Church Mission Society (CMS) approved the establishment of missions in Ceylon. On 20 December 1817 four clergymen - Joseph Knight, Samuel Lambrick, Robert Major and Benjamin Ward - and their wives left England and sailed to Ceylon on board the ''Vittoria''. They arrived in late June 1818. Knight went to Jaffna, Lambrick went to Colombo, Major and his wife went to Galle and Ward and his wife to Trincomalee. Knight started his missionary work in 1818 in Nallur. In 1820 Knight bought a mission house in Nallur to conduct regular services. An old, dilapidated Dutch church next to the mission house was handed over to the mission by the government in 1823. This church was the site of the Nallur Kandaswamy Temple before it was destroyed by the Portuguese. Nallur (Jaffna)
Nallur ( ta, நல்லூர்; si, නල්ලූර් ) is an affluent suburb in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. It is located 3 km south from Jaffna city centre. Nallur is most famous for Nallur Kandaswamy temple, one of Sri Lanka's most sacred place of pilgrimage for Sri Lankan Hindus. Nallur is also famous for being the historical capital of the old Jaffna Kingdom and birthplace of renowned philosopher and theologian, Arumuka Navalar. Galle ( si, ගාල්ල, translit=Gālla; ta, காலி, translit=Kāli) (formerly Point de Galle) is a major city in Sri Lanka, situated on the southwestern tip, from Colombo. Galle is the provincial capital and largest city of Southern Province, Sri Lanka and is the capital of Galle District. James Chapman (bishop)
James Chapman (1799–1879) was the first Anglican Bishop of Colombo, in British Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), serving from 1845 to 1861. Life He was educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge, where he graduated Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1823, and Cambridge Master of Arts (MA Cantab) in 1826. He was made deacon in Ely in 1824 and ordained priest the next year in Chichester. He became a Fellow of King's College, one of the Masters of Eton, and Evening Lecturer at Windsor. In 1834, he was appointed to the Rectory of Dunton Wayletts, in Essex, the patronage of which was with King's College. On 7 November 1845, he was consecrated as the first Bishop of Colombo at St Peter's Church, Colombo, and received the degree of Doctor of Divinity (DD) from his University. Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil ( ta, நல்லூர் கந்தசுவாமி கோவில் si, නල්ලුරුව ස්කන්ධ කුමාර කෝවිල) is a significant Hindu temple, located in Nallur, Northern Province, Sri Lanka. The presiding deity is Lord Murugan in the form of the holy 'Vel' in the Sanctum, the primary shrine, and in other forms, namely, Shanmugar, Muthukumaraswami, Valli Kaanthar with consorts Valli and Deivayanai, and Thandayuthapani, sans consorts in secondary shrines in the temple.
