St. Ives (TV Series)
''St. Ives'' was a television mini-series broadcast in 1955. Adapted by producer Rex Tucker from the novel of the same name by Robert Louis Stevenson, it aired on the BBC for a total of six 30-minute episodes. Cast included William Russell, Noelle Middleton, and Francis Matthews. The most notable aspect of the production is that, unlike many BBC series of the era, the episodes still exist. Rex Tucker
Rex Tucker (20 February 1913 – 10 August 1996) was a British television director in the 1950s and 1960s. He was born in March in the Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire. Tucker joined the BBC in 1937 to work in radio where he remained for several years before moving to TV work. In 1954 Tucker wrote and directed ''The Three Princes'' which featured future Doctor Who producer Barry Letts and actor Roger Delgado who later became well known for playing the Doctor's opponent The Master. Robert Louis Stevenson
Robert Louis Stevenson (born Robert Lewis Balfour Stevenson; 13 November 1850 – 3 December 1894) was a Scottish novelist, essayist, poet and travel writer. He is best known for works such as ''Treasure Island'', ''Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde'', '' Kidnapped'' and ''A Child's Garden of Verses''. Born and educated in Edinburgh, Stevenson suffered from serious bronchial trouble for much of his life, but continued to write prolifically and travel widely in defiance of his poor health. As a young man, he mixed in London literary circles, receiving encouragement from Andrew Lang, Edmund Gosse, Leslie Stephen and W. E. William Russell (English Actor)
William Russell Enoch (born 19 November 1924) is an English actor. He achieved prominence in 1956 when he took the title role in the ITV television series '' The Adventures of Sir Lancelot'' (1956–1957). In 1963, he became part of the original lead cast of BBC1's ''Doctor Who'', playing the role of schoolteacher Ian Chesterton opposite William Hartnell from the show's first episode until 1965. Russell's film roles include parts in '' The Man Who Never Was'' (1956), '' The Great Escape'' (1963) and ''Superman'' (1978). On television, he notably appeared as Ted Sullivan in ''Coronation Street'' in 1992. Noelle Middleton
Evelyn Noelle Woodeson (née Middleton; 18 December 1926 – 30 January 2016) was an Irish actress and one of the first BBC television announcers. She was also a leading lady of the 1950s British films. Middleton received a BAFTA Film Award nomination for her leading role in '' Carrington V.C.'' (1954). Her other notable film roles were in '' Happy Ever After'' (1954), '' John and Julie'' (1955), '' The Iron Petticoat'' (1956), and '' Three Men in a Boat'' (1956). Francis Matthews (actor)
Francis Matthews (2 September 1927 – 14 June 2014) was an English actor, best known for playing Paul Temple in the BBC television series of the same name and for voicing Captain Scarlet in ''Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons''. Early life Matthews was born in York on 2 September 1927, to Henry and Kathleen Matthews. His father was a shop steward at the Rowntree's chocolate factory near York. His parents took him often to the theatre, where he gained a love of acting. He attended St George's RC Primary School, then St Michael's Jesuit College in Leeds. He found work as a stagehand at the Theatre Royal in Leeds, and made his theatrical debut in 1945 in the play ''The Corn Is Green'' before performing his national service in the Royal Navy. Lost television broadcasts are mostly those early television programs which cannot be accounted for in studio archives (or in personal archives) usually because of deliberate destruction or neglect. Common reasons for loss A significant proportion of early television programming was never recorded in the first place. Early broadcasting in all genres was live and sometimes performed repeatedly.
