St. George's Church (Sandata)
St. George's Church is a Russian Orthodox church in the village of Sandata, Salsky District, Rostov Oblast, Russia. It belongs to Volgodonsk Diocese of the Moscow Patriarchate and was built in the early 20th century. History Sandata village was founded in 1805, and the first church there was established almost half a century later, the Church of the Protection of the Holy Virgin, constructed in 1851. It also had a Sunday school. The Church of St. George, according to longtime residents, was built in 1912 (although there is no accurate data about it). In 1960, during the USSR anti-religious campaign (1958–1964), anti-religious campaign of Nikita Khrushchev, the church was closed after the death of the church's priest; St. George's was the only remaining church in the village. USSR Anti-religious Campaign (1958–1964)
Nikita Khrushchev's anti-religious campaign was the last large-scale anti-religious campaign undertaken in the Soviet Union. It succeeded a comparatively tolerant period towards religion which had lasted from 1941 until the late 1950s. As a result, the church had grown in stature and membership, provoking concerns from the Soviet government. These concerns resulted in a new campaign of persecution. The official aim of anti-religious campaigns was to achieve the atheist society that communism envisioned. Khrushchev had long held radical views regarding the abolition of religion, and this campaign resulted largely from his own leadership rather than from pressure in other parts of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU).
