St Francis Xavier's Cathedral is a Catholic Church, Roman Catholic cathedral in Adelaide, South Australia. It is classified as being a Gothic Revival architecture, Gothic Revival building in the Early English Period, Early English style. The tower stands 36 m high and is 56.5 m lengthwise and 29.5 m horizontally. The foundation stone was laid in 1856 and the building was opened in 1858. The construction of the tower began in 1887. However, it was not completed until 1996. History In 1838, two years after the proclamation of South Australia, an advertisement was put up to organise religious meetings for South Australian Catholics. The first Mass was celebrated in a house on East Terrace, Adelaide, East Terrace in 1840. St. Francis Xavier's Cathedral or Geraldton Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Geraldton, Western Australia. It is the seat of Bishop of Geraldton. History Construction work on the cathedral began on 20 June 1916. The first phase ended with the construction of the nave and the twin towers, topped by two domes, and was completed in 1918. The second phase involved the construction of the crypt, sanctuary and Sisters' Chapel in 1926. The third and final phase, the dome, the transepts and the sacristy were completed and formally opened on 28 August 1938. It is the largest and most imposing work of priest and architect, John Hawes. Between 2015 and 2017 a 10 million restoration, conservation, and enhancement project was undertaken. Saint Francis Xavier Cathedral, located in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, is the seat of the Roman Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Wollongong, presently the Most Reverend Brian Mascord. The cathedral is the oldest church of any denomination in the Illawarra region. History In 1836 a wooden chapel with seating for 250 people was built for the Catholics of Wollongong. The first Catholic school was opened in 1838. The pioneer priest Father John Rigney decided to build a larger permanent church in 1839. The church of St Francis Xavier is a stone building in the Gothic style, richly ornamented and large enough to contain 500 people. Its estimated cost was 2,000 Pounds. The building was furnished in 1848 with a splendid Gothic interior. Saint Francis Xavier Cathedral (Green Bay, Wisconsin)
St. Francis Xavier Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Green Bay in Green Bay, Wisconsin, United States. The cathedral was named in honor of St. Francis Xavier. The cathedral was planned and erected between 1876 and 1881 under the episcopate of Francis Xavier Krautbauer. It was designed on the pattern of Ludwigskirche, a landmark church in the center of Munich, Germany. Krautbauer ordered a monumental crucifixion painted by Johann Schmitt, a local German-descent painter of the Nazarene movement. Krautbauer was buried under the cathedral's floor. The cathedral began receiving a series of 18 restorations starting in 2014. It closed in September 2017 and was reopened at a 9:00 mass on Sunday December 3, 2017. 2017 Repairs include the floors, pews, paintings, and pipe organ.
