St. Andrew's Episcopal Church (Birmingham, Alabama)
St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Birmingham, Alabama, is a parish church of the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama. St. Andrew's was founded in 1902 as a church school for children who could not get to the downtown Church of the Advent on Sunday. In the following year, the mission was expanded to include Sunday services. A site was acquired and a small church built; the first service was held on Easter, 1905. In December of that year, the parish was incorporated; it was admitted to full parochial rights at the Diocesan Convention of 1906. The original church building, a few blocks from the present church, was destroyed by a tornado in March, 1913. The parish had been considering a new building further up Red Mountain; now they had to act. The present site, at the corner of Eleventh Avenue and Twelfth Street South, was acquired and the cornerstone laid by Bishop Charles Beckwith on St. Andrew's Day, November 30, 1913. Episcopal Diocese Of Alabama
The Episcopal Diocese of Alabama is located in Province IV of the Episcopal Church and serves the state of Alabama with the exception of the extreme southern region, including Mobile, which forms part of the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast. The latter body was formed in 1970 from portions of the territories of the Diocese of Alabama and the Diocese of Florida. The Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham, Alabama, is the see church of the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama. On March 30, 1983, the structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places as the Episcopal Church of the Advent. History The parish church of the Advent was established in 1872, one year after the founding of the city of Birmingham, and was one of the first churches built in the new city. The first building on this site was completed in 1873, but was destroyed by fire on November 24, 1892. The current structure was already underway at that date. It was designed by Wheelock, Joy, and Wheelock, was occupied in the fall of 1893, with the tower and portico undergoing construction until 1895. Charles Minnigerode Beckwith
Charles Minnigerode Beckwith (June 2, 1851 – April 18, 1928) was fourth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama from 1902 till 1928. Early life and education Beckwith was born on June 2, 1851, in Petersburg, Virginia, son of Thomas Stanley Beckwith and Agnes Ruffin. He was educated at the University of Georgia from where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1873. He was also a member of Phi Delta Theta. After graduation, he served as assistant professor of mathematics at the University of the South between 1874 and 1876 and later served as master of Sewanee Grammar School at the University of the South from 1876 till 1879. In 1879, he enrolled at the Berkeley Divinity School in Middletown, Connecticut and graduated in 1881.
