St. Andrew's, Malta
St. Andrew's is an area, formerly part of Għargħur, at the borders of Swieqi and Pembroke, Malta, Pembroke in Malta. It takes its name from ''St Andrews Barracks'' which were part of the Pembroke Army Garrison in the 1900s. History During the early 1900s, St Andrew's had its own adult school for British soldiers called Moynihan House the birthplace of Berkeley Moynihan, 1st Baron Moynihan, Berkeley G.A. Moynihan, an internationally acclaimed British abdominal surgeon who served as president of the Royal College of Surgeons of England for many years. Plans to demolish this historic building raised public disdain with the President, of the Association of Surgeons of Malta, Prof. Joseph Galea asking for it to be saved. Għargħur
Għargħur ( mt, Ħal Għargħur) is a village in the Northern Region, Malta, Northern Region of Malta. It is situated on a hilltop between two valleys, and it has a population of 2,768 as of March 2014. Għargħur Festa In Malta, each village celebrates a different patron saint or two depending on the number of churches in the locality. Each church is dedicated to a different saint. For this reason, some villages celebrate more than one "festa" per year. Swieqi
Swieqi ( mt, Is-Swieqi) is a town in the Northern Region of Malta. It is a residential area just 15 minutes by bus from Sliema and within walking distance of Malta's nightlife and entertainment centres, Paceville and St. Julian's. As the town developed, residential estates took over farmland. The town's name means "water channels", a reminder of the region's past. It has an estimated population of 14,452 as of 1 January 2019. Pembroke is a town in the Northern Region of Malta, and it is considered to be the country's newest locality. To the east is Paceville, the nightlife district of Malta. The coastal town and tourist hub of St. Julian's lies to the southeast, and the residential area of Swieqi lies to the south. Pembroke Army Garrison
Pembroke Garrison is a dispersed collection of former British Army barracks built in the vicinity of Fort Pembroke, northern Malta. History Pembroke Garrison developed around a Victorian fortification (Fort Pembroke), a gun emplacement, a barracks, a tented musketry camp, rifle ranges and training areas. St George's Barracks was built first, followed by Fort Pembroke, then St Andrew's Barracks and finally St Patrick's Barracks; built by the British in four main building phases 19th and 20th centuries. Florissant () is a city in St. Louis County, Missouri, within Greater St. Louis. It is a middle class, second-ring northern suburb of St. Louis. Berkeley George Andrew Moynihan, 1st Baron Moynihan LL.D (2 October 1865 – 7 September 1936), known as Sir Berkeley Moynihan, 1st Baronet, from 1922 to 1929, was a noted British abdominal surgeon. Early years Moynihan was born in Malta in 1865, the son of Captain Andrew Moynihan, VC. His father died in 1867 and Moynihan moved with his mother to Leeds, Yorkshire. He was educated in Leeds and the Christ's Hospital, Newgate, London (1875–1881). Medical career After two years at the Royal Naval School, Eltham, he returned to Leeds to study medicine at the Leeds School of Medicine. Australia Hall
Australia Hall is a former entertainment hall in Pembroke, Malta, which was built by the Australian Branch of the British Red Cross Society in 1915. The building burnt down in 1998, and only its roofless shell remains today, awaiting redevelopment. History Australia Hall was built by the Australian Branch of the British Red Cross Society as an entertainment venue for wounded soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who were being treated in Malta during World War I. The hall was built in November 1915, and was officially opened on 22 January 1916 by Governor Paul Methuen.
