Oscar Beregi Sr
Oscar Beregi (born Oszkár Beregi, 24 January 1876 – 18 October 1965) was a Hungarian-Jewish actor who appeared primarily in German films. Biography Beregi was born in Budapest, Hungary, and was the father of actor Oscar Beregi Jr. He acted on stage in Hungary for 21 years. In April 1920, as "the only Jewish actor of prominence" acting with the Budapest National Theatre, he was the subject of a demonstration that led to the group's changing its program and presenting a play in which Beregi did not participate. In the early 1920s, Beregi was exiled from Hungary because of his "alleged political activities". During the exile he acted in Vienna for four years. He served as president of the Film Actors' Association of Vienna. Beregi appeared in 27 films between 1916 and 1953. He played Professor Baum in Fritz Lang's film ''Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse''. Magda Sonja (born Věnceslava Johana Veselá; 23 May 1886 – 20 August 1974) was an Austrian-American actress. She appeared in 42 films between 1917 and 1936, although she is perhaps best known for her portrayal of Mata Hari in '' Mata Hari: The Red Dancer'' (1927). Prior to becoming an actress, she was a cabaret performer and chansonnière. She is considered to be one of Austria's first movie stars, only paralleled by Liane Haid. Biography Věnceslava Johana Veselá was born on 23 May 1886 to Czech parents. She was affectionately called "Slava" by her family. She trained in music and dance, and took on the pseudonym Magda Slawa, which would eventually derive into Magda Sonja. In 1907, she was a choir singer at the Theater an der Wien, and appeared in classical and modern roles at the Vienna City Theater, where she met her husband, Friedrich Feher. Friedrich Feher (born Friedrich Weiß, 16 March 1889 – 30 September 1950) was an Austrian actor and film director. He first entered the film business in 1913, starting out as an actor but quickly gravitated toward directing. He is perhaps best remembered as Francis, the protagonist of '' The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari'' (1920). He directed ''The House Without Windows'' that same year (based on a book by Thea von Harbou), in which his art directors mimicked the Expressionist set designs of ''Caligari''; it is now considered a lost film. Feher died in 1950 in Stuttgart at age 61. Reinhold Häussermann (10 February 1884 – 4 April 1947) was a German-born Austrian stage and film actor. Gustav Diessl (30 December 1899 – 20 March 1948) was an Austrian artist, and film and stage actor. Biography Diessl was born Gustav Karl Balthasar Diessl in Vienna. In 1916, he was an extra on different stages in Vienna but was soon recruited into the army for World War I. During his military service, he was held prisoner for a year. After the war, Diessl started training as a stage designer but left to pursue a professional career in acting. Meanwhile, he played for a touring company and in 1921 had his first fixed engagement at the Neue Wiener Bühne. That same year he made his film debut, appearing in ''Im Banne der Kralle'', which was produced in Austria and directed by Carl Froelich (G. W. Pabst, who would later direct Diessl in ''Vastfronten 1918'', made his only appearance as a screen actor in this film). Benno Vigny (real name Benoit Philippe Weinfeld; 28 October 1889 – 31 October 1965) was a French-German novelist and screenwriter. Life and works Vigny was born in Commercy and grew up in Vienna. He moved to Berlin in the 1920s. There he began working as a screenwriter in collaboration with other writers, particularly for German-British co-productions. In 1927, his novel ''Amy Jolly, die Frau aus Marrakesch'' (Amy Jolly, the Woman from Marrakesh) was published, which became the 1930 film ''Morocco'' in the USA, in which Marlene Dietrich made her Hollywood debut.
