Sri Lanka National Rugby Sevens Team
The Sri Lanka national rugby sevens team, known as the Tuskers (similar to their counterpart national rugby union team), represents Sri Lanka in men's international rugby sevens. They have competed in the Hong Kong Sevens since the 1980s. Sri Lanka Rugby is the governing body for rugby union in Sri Lanka. It is one of the oldest governing bodies in the world, being founded as the Ceylon Rugby Football Union in 1908. History The Ceylon Rugby Football Union was founded in 1908. The Ceylon Rugby Football Union (Ceylon RFU) was founded on 10 August 1908 at a meeting between representatives from Uva, Dimbula, Kelani Valley, Dickoya, Kandy and Colombo at the Grand Orient Hotel (now known as Hotel Taprobane) in Colombo. At the meeting H. B. T. Boucjer (from Uva) was elected as Chairman with the representatives unanimously resolving to form the Ceylon Rugby Football Rugby Union and to apply to be affiliated with the English Rugby Football Union. Rugby sevens at the 2022 Commonwealth Games was held at the Coventry Stadium from 29 to 31 July 2022. A total of 16 teams competed in the men's tournament, while eight contested the women's tournament. South Africa won the men's tournament, while Australia won the women's. Rugby sevens at the 2014 Commonwealth Games was the fifth time in the competition's history that the event took place. The tournament's preliminaries took place on 26 July, with the classification matches, quarterfinals, semifinals and medal matches the following day. The venue for the competition was Ibrox Stadium. South Africa national rugby team, South Africa beat the reigning champions New Zealand national rugby sevens team, New Zealand in the final on 27 July, beating their opponents 17-12. The rugby sevens at the 2010 Commonwealth Games was the fourth Commonwealth Games at which rugby sevens was played. Rugby sevens was one of only two sports contested only by males with no women's competition (the other being boxing). The rugby competition was held between 11 and 12 October 2010. The competition venue was the Delhi University Stadium within North Campus of the Delhi University. Namibia withdrew and was later replaced by Malaysia. Due to the withdrawal, Uganda was shifted to Group D while Malaysia was placed in Group C. Fiji, described as "perennial crowd favourites", was absent, due to the country being suspended from the Commonwealth following the 2006 military coup. The rugby sevens at the 2006 Commonwealth Games was the third Commonwealth Games at which rugby sevens was played. It is one of the male-only sports at the Commonwealth Games, the other being boxing. The venue for the rugby competition was the Telstra Dome, on the western edge of Melbourne's Central Business District. Preliminary matches were held on 16 March, with the finals the following day. Sixteen teams competed in the rugby sevens tournament as they were separated into four groups of four. The top two teams of each group qualified through to the cup finals while the bottom two would compete in the bowl. After finishing on top of Pool A, New Zealand won the gold medal match as they defeated England 29–21 in the final on 17 March 2006. Fiji claimed the bronze medal defeating Australia 24–17 in the 3rd place final. In the minor finals, Wales took out the plate final with Kenya winning the bowl. Rugby sevens has been played at every Commonwealth Games since its first appearance at the 1998 edition held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Rugby sevens was an optional sport that was included for 2002 and 2006; it was then made a 'Core' sport by the Commonwealth Games Federation, necessitating its appearance at all future games from the 2010 Games onward. New Zealand dominated the men's tournament at its inception until 2014 when they lost for the first time at the Games, playing South Africa in the gold medal match. 2022 marked the first time that New Zealand failed to reach the gold medal match in either the men's or women's tournaments. Hangzhou will be the third Chinese city to host the Asian Games, after Beijing in 1990 and Guangzhou in 2010.
