Spyder's Web
''Spyder's Web'' was a British crime drama television series produced by ATV for ITV and broadcast in 1972. It starred Anthony Ainley as Clive Hawksworth and Patricia Cutts as Charlotte "Lottie" Dean as two secret agents working for the mysterious Spyder organisation in the interests of the British government. Overview In common with many other such series of the time, ''Spyder's Web'' adopted an ironic approach to its subject matter. The Spyder organisation used as its cover a down-at-heel film company, Arachnid Films, and only Dean and Hawksworth were in on the secret; the company's other employees, Wallis Ackroyd and Albert Mason, believed the cover to be genuine. Indeed, Dean claimed to have won awards for her documentaries. Hawksworth, the "action man," was a knowing caricature of the steely-eyed, jutting-jawed heroes of former times, and was alleged to have been "steeped in Bulldog Drummond from an early age." Dennis Vance
Dennis Vance (18 March 1924 – 6 October 1983) was a British television producer, director, and occasional actor. Born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, he began his career as an actor in the late 1940s, appearing in small film parts, such as Poet's Pub, in 1949, before switching to become a producer with BBC Television in the early 1950s. Later, in 1955 he became the first Head of Drama at the ITV contractor ABC Weekend TV, who went on air in 1956, serving the Midlands and the North of England at weekends. He also produced episodes of ''The Adventures of the Scarlet Pimpernel'' (1956), also directing a couple of episodes. At ABC, Vance oversaw the creation of the anthology drama series ''Armchair Theatre'', which was networked nationally across the ITV regions on Sunday evenings. Robert Holmes (scriptwriter)
Robert Colin Holmes (2 April 1926 – 24 May 1986) was a British television scriptwriter. For over 25 years he contributed to some of the most popular programmes screened in the UK. He is particularly remembered for his work on science fiction on television, science fiction programmes, most notably his extensive contributions to ''Doctor Who'', which included working as its script editor from 1974 to 1977. Holmes suffered ill health from the early 1980s. He died in May 1986 while working on scripts for the second and final Sixth Doctor season ''The Trial of a Time Lord''. Early career In 1944, at the age of 18, Holmes joined the army, fighting with the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders regiment in Burma. He rapidly earned a commission, and as such became the youngest commissioned officer in the entire British army during the Second World War. Alan Hackney
Alan Charles Langley Hackney (born 10 September 1924, Manchester – d. 15 May 2009, Hertfordshire) was an English novelist and screenwriter. Biography He was educated at Thornleigh Salesian College in Bolton, and later, while at Manchester University, was called up to the army. Hackney was posted to Maidstone Barracks for one year where he met his first wife and was later posted to India. After demobilisation he proceeded to New College, Oxford, where he read Politics, Philosophy and Economics under the tutelage of Isaiah Berlin. He is best known for two of his novels, ''Private's Progress'' and ''Private Life'', both of which were adapted into Boulting brothers films: the former as ''Private's Progress'' (1956); and the latter as ''I'm All Right Jack'' (1959).
