Spouse Of The President Of The Philippines
The following is a list of spouses of holders of the position of president of the Philippines. Customarily, the wife or husband of the president held the title of First Lady or First Gentleman of the Philippines, First Lady or First Gentleman serving functional role at the Malacañang Palace. Hence the titles are also erroneously used to refer to the president's spouse. Three spouses, that of Elpidio Quirino, Diosdado Macapagal and Corazon Aquino, were already deceased at the start of their respective partner's presidencies although Macapagal was married to his second wife at the start of his presidency. In the case of Rodrigo Duterte, his marriage with Elizabeth Zimmerman was already annulled at the start of his presidency. Duterte had another partner, Cielito Avanceña his common-law wife. Manuel Acuña Roxas (born Manuel Roxas y Acuña; ; January 1, 1892 – April 15, 1948) was a Filipino lawyer and politician who served as the fifth president of the Philippines, who served from 1946 until his death due to heart attacks in 1948. He served briefly as the third and last president of the Commonwealth of the Philippines from May 28, 1946, to July 4, 1946, and became the first president of the independent Third Philippine Republic after the United States ceded its sovereignty over the Philippines. Trinidad de Leon-Roxas ('' née'' de Leon y Roura; October 4, 1900 – June 20, 1995) was the wife of Philippine President Manuel Roxas and the fifth First Lady of the Philippines. They were married in 1921 and had two children, Ruby and Gerardo (Gerry). A native of San Miguel, Bulacan, De León-Roxas was also a beauty pageant contestant, having been crowned Carnival Queen (Queen of the Orient) at the Manila Carnival in 1920. As the country's first lady during the post-war years, De León-Roxas got involved in various charitable organizations such as the White Cross and the Girl Scouts of the Philippines and restored the annual Malacañang Christmas gift-giving begun prior to World War II. Esperanza Escolar Limjap Osmeña (December 18, 1894 – April 4, 1978) was the second wife of Philippine President Sergio Osmeña and is considered the fourth First Lady of the Philippines. Biography Esperanza Limjap y Escolar was born in San Miguel, Manila to Mariano Limjap y Nolasco and María Escolar y Carreón. Sergio Osmeña Sr. (, ; 9 September 1878 – 19 October 1961) was a Filipino lawyer and politician who served as the fourth president of the Philippines from 1944 to 1946. He was vice president under Manuel L. Quezon. Upon Quezon's sudden death in 1944, Osmeña succeeded him at age 65, becoming the oldest person to assume the Philippine presidency until Rodrigo Duterte took office in 2016 at age 71. A founder of the Nacionalista Party, Osmeña was also the first Visayan to become president.
