''Sports Tonight'' is an American sports news television program that aired on CNN from 1980 to 2001, and on CNN/SI from December 12, 1996 to the station's demise on May 15, 2002. It normally aired at 11 p.m. ET/10 p.m. CT.. History The early years When CNN went on the air on June 1, 1980 one of the first newscasts was a sports bulletin where baseball and North American Soccer League highlights were shown. Later, a nightly program called ''Sports Tonight'' went on the air in late night. During this time, Nick Charles and Fred Hickman became established as the program's co-hosts. In addition, CNN aired a weekend program called ''Sports Saturday'' and ''Sports Sunday''. One of the program's most popular features was called "Play of the Day" (later known as the "Replay of the Day"), which showed a highlight (i.e., a spectacular play) from that day's action. CNN Sports Illustrated
CNN/Sports Illustrated (CNN/SI) was a 24-hour sports news network. It was created by Time Warner, merging together its CNN and ''Sports Illustrated'' brands and related resources. It was launched on December 12, 1996. Other news networks like ESPNews, provided 30-minute blocks of news and highlights in a similar fashion to CNN Headline News at the time, but CNN/SI was live daily from 7am to 2am. Their purpose was to provide the most comprehensive sports news service on television, bringing in-depth sports news from around the world, and integrating the Internet and television. Closure CNN/SI's closure had been attributed to competition with other all-sports news networks which started around the same time, such as ESPNews and Fox Sports Net's ''National Sports Report''. CNN Tonight
''CNN Tonight'' is a title that has been used by multiple news programs broadcast by the U.S. cable news channel CNN. The title has primarily been used for transitional programs aired by CNN in the evening and prime time hours as part of changes to its programming lineup—including the departure (either voluntary or via termination) or reassignment of anchors. The majority of programs aired under the title have been anchored by a rotation of CNN personalities. The title was first used for a short-lived program in 2001 anchored by Bill Hemmer. In November 2009, ''CNN Tonight'' temporarily replaced ''Lou Dobbs Tonight'' after Lou Dobbs' departure from the network. Daniel Patrick Pugh (born 1957), known professionally as Dan Patrick, is an American sportscaster, radio personality, and actor. He hosts ''The Dan Patrick Show'' broadcast on radio on Premiere Radio Networks and streaming on Peacock. Gary Miller (born }) is an American sportscaster and radio host, best known for his tenure at ESPN from 1990 to 2004. Early life and education Miller is a native of Naperville, Illinois and a graduate of Southern Illinois University. Robert "Bob" Lorenz (born October 2, 1963) is an American television anchor. He is the primary studio host on the YES Network, and hosts the New York Yankees pregame and postgame shows on YES telecasts, as well as Brooklyn Nets pregame and postgame shows for cablecasts. Lorenz also hosts other shows on YES, including Yankees Hot Stove, a show that tracks the offseason movement of the Yankees and the rest of the teams in MLB. Jim Huber (August 28, 1944 – January 2, 2012) was an American sports commentator, writer, and essayist. He worked as a sports anchor for the former CNN Sports Illustrated, before joining Turner Sports in 2000. Huber was raised in Ocala, Florida. He attended Presbyterian College, but graduated from Central Florida. He began his career in sports journalism as a sportswriter for the ''Miami News'' and ''The Atlanta Journal''. John Daniel Hicks (born June 2, 1962) is an American sportscaster for NBC Sports since 1992. Early years Born and raised in Tucson, Arizona, Hicks graduated from Sabino High School in 1980 and from the University of Arizona in 1984. After starting in radio, he was a weekend sports anchor on KVOA, the NBC affiliate in Tucson. Hicks moved east to work as a sports reporter for CNN in Atlanta in 1989 and went to NBC Sports in 1992. John Fricke (born November 30, 1950) is a historian and author focusing on '' The Wizard of Oz'' and Judy Garland. Fricke was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he attended John Marshall High School and worked in advertising at the Melody Top Theater.
