Sport Relief 2012
''Sport Relief 2012'' was a fundraising event organised by Comic Relief. It was broadcast on BBC One and BBC Two on the evening of 23 March 2012 from 7:00 pm to 1:45 am, live from the BBC Television Centre. It raised £50,447,197, the most ever raised by a Comic Relief event. Before/after the live event In the autumn of 2011, David Walliams swam of the River Thames in eight days. During the eight days Walliams suffered from illness and flu. Walliams took time to recover after the event due to the intake of Thames water that contained bacteria and sewage. He swam a total distance in eight days, a total of 111,352 strokes were swam and 68,186 calories were burnt. So far he has raised £1,194,258 for Sport Relief. Telethon
A telethon (a portmanteau of "television" and "marathon") is a televised fundraising event that lasts many hours or even days, the purpose of which is to raise money for a charitable, political or other purportedly worthy cause. Most telethons feature heavy solicitations for pledges (promises to donate funds at a later time) by masters of ceremonies or hosts, who are often local celebrities or media personalities combined with variety show style entertainment such as singers, bands and instrumentalists. In some cases, telethons feature content related to the cause being supported, such as interviews with charitable beneficiaries, tours of charity-supported projects, or pre-taped sequences. River Thames
The River Thames ( ), known alternatively in parts as the River Isis, is a river that flows through southern England including London. Comic relief is the inclusion of a humorous character, scene, or witty dialogue in an otherwise serious work, often to relieve tension. ''Sport Relief'' was a biennial charity event from Comic Relief, in association with BBC Sport, established in 2002. It was the idea of Kevin Cahill, CBE, who had joined Comic Relief in 1991 to establish a new department as Director of Education and Communications and went on to become its creative director and CEO. Now joint Honorary Life President with Sir Lenny Henry, Cahill joined having created the Education Department at the National Theatre in London and been its first Head. In 2021, Comic Relief announced that from 2022 it was changing from alternating Sport Relief and Red Nose Day campaigns to Red Nose Day becoming annual and Sport Relief evolving into a year-round brand. ''Let's Sing and Dance'', formerly known as ''Let's Dance'', is a British television programme shown on BBC One, featuring celebrities performing famous dance routines to raise money for the charities Comic Relief and Sport Relief.
