Split Channel
The Split Channel ( hr, Splitski kanal), is a channel in the Adriatic Sea, off the coast of mainland Dalmatia, defined by the southern shores of the island of Čiovo, the northern shores of the island of Šolta and the western shores of the island of Brač. It is accessible from the open sea through the Drvenik Channel or Šolta Channel from the west, and through the Split Gates (''Splitska vrata'') straits—narrow passage between Šolta and Brač to the south of the Split Channel. To the east, the Split Channel is connected to the Brač Channel. All the access routes accommodate capesize ships. The Split Channel and the Split Gates, named after the nearby city of Split, are the most direct route from the international waters to the Port of Split. In the Split Gates lies Mrduja island, an islet notable for being the turning point of the local Mrduja Regatta, an annual sailboat competition. Milna is a village and municipality on the western side of the island of Brač, Split-Dalmatia County, Croatia. The village has a population of 833. Mrduja
Mrduja is an uninhabited island in the Croatian region of Dalmatia. It is located in the Adriatic Sea, within the Split Gates between the islands of Brač and Šolta, about 400 m from Cape Zaglav near Milna. The island is nearer to Brač than to Šolta: a legend goes that the inhabitants of Brač and those of Šolta wrangled over whom the island belonged to so they used a rope in an attempt to pull it from one side of the Split Channel to the other. The people of Brač won the tug of war. A lighthouse (CRO 099), the ruins of old fortification, and several pines, agaves and opuntias grace the islet, which is the turning point for the Mrduja Regatta. Port Of Split
The Port of Split ( hr, Luka Split) is a port in the central Dalmatian city of Split, Croatia. The port was originally a trading post originally established by Greek settlers from the island of Vis and subsequently taken over by the Romans. The port thrived through the Middle Ages, but it suffered a decline in the late 18th and early 19th centuries when the Port of Rijeka took over as the primary trading and shipping outlet of the region. The decline was also attributed to the decline of the Ottoman Empire, a traditional market for the Port of Split, and the growing domination of Austrian Empire. As of 2017, the port ranks as the largest passenger port in Croatia, the largest passenger port in the Adriatic, and the 11th largest port in the Mediterranean, with annual passenger volume of approximately 5 million. Capesize
Capesize ships are the largest dry cargo ships with ball mark dimension: about 170,000 DWT (deadweight tonnage) capacity, 290 m long, 45 m beam (wide), 18m draught (under water depth). They are too large to transit the Suez Canal ( Suezmax limits) or Panama Canal ( Neopanamax limits), and so have to pass either Cape Agulhas or Cape Horn to traverse between oceans. When the Suez Canal was deepened in 2009, it became possible for some capesize ships to transit the Canal and so change categories.
