''Spirou et l'aventure'', written and drawn by Jijé, is the first published album containing ''Spirou et Fantasio'' adventures. The 6 featured stories were produced during and after World War II, and serialised in the Franco-Belgian comics magazine ' ('' Spirou'' magazine) during this unusual period. They were assembled and published as a hardcover album in 1948 and feature the first appearances of Fantasio. Éditions Dupuis S.A. () is a Belgium, Belgian publisher of comic albums and magazines. Based in Marcinelle near Charleroi, Dupuis was founded in 1922 by Jean Dupuis, and is mostly famous for its comic comics album, albums and magazines. It is originally a French language publisher, but publishes many editions both in French and Dutch language, Dutch. Other language editions are mostly licensed to other publishers. Dupuis was for a long time a family business but was sold in the early 1980s and has since changed ownership a few times. It's an anthology magazine with new features appearing regularly, containing a mix of short humor strips and serialized features, of which the most popular series would be collected as albums by Dupuis afterwards. Joseph Gillain (), better known by his pen name Jijé (; 13 January 1914 – 19 June 1980), was a Belgian comics artist, best known for being a seminal artist on the ''Spirou et Fantasio'' strip (and for having introduced the Fantasio character) and the creator of one of the first major European western strips, ''Jerry Spring''. Biography Born Joseph Gillain in Gedinne, Namur, he completed various art studies (woodcraft, goldsmithing, drawing and painting) at the abbey of Maredsous. François Robert Velter (; 9 February 1909 – 27 April 1991), known by his pen-name Rob-Vel (), was a French cartoonist. He is best known for creating the character '' Spirou'' in 1938. Biography Like ''Spirou'', Velter began his career as a lift attendant at age 16, in the London Ritz Charlton. He later learned the trade as an assistant to American cartoonist Martin Branner on the ''Winnie Winkle'' strip from 1934 to 1936. In 1938, Velter created the title character for the launch of a new magazine by Belgian publisher Éditions Dupuis, ''Le Journal de Spirou''.
