Spier And Rohns
Spier, Rohns & Gehrke was a noted Detroit, Michigan architectural firm operated by Frederick H. Spier and William C. Rohns, best remembered for designs of churches and railroad stations. These were frequently executed in the Richardson Romanesque style. F.H. Spier, W.C. Rohns and Hans Gehrke were authors of the Detroit Chamber of Commerce, tallest building in the city at the time of construction (1895). Hans Gehrke's well known structures include the Fire Department Headquarters on Larned Street in Detroit (currently Hotel "Foundation"), and residence of Robert C. Detroit Chamber Of Commerce Building
The United Way Community Services Building is a high-rise office building completed in 1895 at 1212 Griswold Street, at the northeast corner of State Street, in the Capitol Park Historic District of downtown Detroit, Michigan. The 12-story building was designed by architects Spier & Rohns and was the tallest in the state when built. The lower two floors are faced with a brown rusticated stone with the main entry centered on the south façade and framed by four square pilasters of gray granite. Floors three through five are smooth stone and floors six through twelve are tan brick. The structure originally had an elaborate cornice surrounding the twelfth floor which was removed in the 1950s. The light court which extended from the fifth to twelfth floor above the entry was filled in 1988 and faced with glass and a gabled glass roof to provide additional office space. The Grand Trunk Railway (; french: Grand Tronc) was a railway system that operated in the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario and in the American states of Connecticut, Maine, Michigan, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. The railway was operated from headquarters in Montreal, Quebec, with corporate headquarters in London, United Kingdom (4 Warwick House Street). It cost an estimated $160 million to build. Durand, Michigan
Durand is a city in Shiawassee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,446 at the 2010 census. Nicknamed "Railroad City, USA", it is best known for its large train station which was a major hub for the Grand Trunk Western and Ann Arbor railroads during most of the 20th century, and is currently served by Amtrak. Durand Union Station
Durand Union Station is a historic train station in Durand, Michigan. The station, which now serves Amtrak ''Blue Water'' trains, was originally a busy Grand Trunk Western Railroad and Ann Arbor Railroad station, as well as a local office for Grand Trunk Western, from its construction in 1903 until 1974. It is currently owned by the city of Durand and leased by Durand Union Station, Inc. a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation, restoration, and maintenance of the building and its surrounding property. Grand Trunk Western Station (Lansing)
The Grand Trunk Western station was a historic railroad station in Lansing, Michigan. The station was listed as a Michigan State Historic Site in 1978, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. History The first rail line through Lansing was established in 1856 when the Detroit and Milwaukee Railroad constructed a line through the city. This was followed in 1872 by the Michigan Central Railroad and in 1879 by the Chicago and Grand Trunk Railway. By the early 1900s there were six separate rail lines through the city. After the Chicago and Grand Trunk Railway reorganized in 1900, they built a series of new depots along their line. When REO Motor Car Company announced the construction of a new plant along the Grand Trunk line, the railroad decided to construct their new depot near the new REO plant. The Union Depot is a former train station, located at 637 E. Michigan Avenue in Lansing, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. Despite the union name, Grand Trunk Western trains stopped at a different station in Lansing 1.5 miles away. History The first railroad through Lansing was the Amboy, Lansing and Traverse Bay Railroad, which arrived in 1863. The Jackson & Lansing Railroad followed in 1864, and in 1871 the Michigan Central Railroad began leasing these lines. Michigan Central constructed a wooden passenger depot at this spot in 1873. The depot also served the Detroit, Lansing and Lake Michigan Rail Road, which had constructed tracks through Lansing in 1868. In 1900, this line was consolidated into the Pere Marquette Railroad. Saline ( ') is a city in Washtenaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 8,948 at the 2020 census. The city borders Saline Township to the southwest, and the two are administered autonomously. History Before the 18th century, Native Americans traveled to what is now Saline to hunt wildlife and gather salt from the salt springs they found nearby. Saline First Presbyterian Church
Saline First Presbyterian Church is a historic church located at 143 E. Michigan Avenue in Saline, Michigan. It was added to the National Register in 1985 and designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1995. History In 1831, soon after the opening of the Erie Canal, a group of twelve Presbyterian families from Newark, New York pulled up stakes and headed westward to Detroit. The families settled in the area around what is now Saline, and immediately began holding church services. For a decade, these services were held in private homes, schools, or other meeting places; finally, in 1842, the Presbyterian congregation constructed a frame church on the site where the present church is located.
