Spiekeroog
Spiekeroog is one of the East Frisian Islands, off the North Sea coast of Germany. It is situated between Langeoog to its west, and Wangerooge to its east. The island belongs to the district of Wittmund, in Lower Saxony in Germany. The only village on the island is also called Spiekeroog. The island is part of the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site by the UNESCO and the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park. Spiekeroog covers an area of 18.25 km2, the shortest distance to the mainland is 5.7 km. The island is, with the exception of electronic cars and fire and rescue vehicles, free of cars. A daily ferry service from the harbour of Neuharlingersiel connects the island with the German mainland. The island is separated from neighbouring Wangerooge by a gat known as the Harle. Hannes Helmke
Hannes Helmke (born 10 May 1967 in Heidelberg) is a German sculptor creating bronze sculptures. Life After an education in wood sculpture, Helmke attended postgraduate studies in free art at the Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences in Alfter which he completed in the summer of 1998. Since then Helmke has lived and worked as a freelance sculptor in Cologne. He spends the summer months on the North Sea island of Spiekeroog. All designs are created on Spiekeroog and implemented in bronze in Cologne. Work Helmke's artistic theme is the individual and his position in the world. Helmke's original inspiration was the long-drawn evening shadows of the human form. In recent years, Helmke's figures have changed. At first the feet were very big and the limbs were extremely long. East Frisian Islands
The East Frisian Islands (German: ''Ostfriesische Inseln'', West Frisian: ''Eastfryske eilannen'', stq, Aastefräiske Ailounds) are a chain of islands in the North Sea, off the coast of East Frisia in Lower Saxony, Germany. The islands extend for some from west to east between the mouths of the Ems and Jade / Weser rivers and lie about 3.5 to 10 km offshore. Between the islands and the mainland are extensive mudflats, known locally as ''Watten'', which form part of the Wadden Sea. In front of the islands are Germany's territorial waters, which occupy a much larger area than the islands themselves. Harle (gat)
The Harle or the Harle Seegatt is a gat in the North Sea. The Harle runs in a north-south direction between the East Frisian Islands of Spiekeroog and Wangerooge. The main channel subsequently divides into the ''Alte Harle'' (''Muschelbalje'') and the approach to the port of Wangerooge, the ''Dove Harle'' auf. The location and depth of the ''Harle'' navigation channel undergoes major changes. Its depth is published monthly in the notice to mariners. For a long time Wangerooge was the island with the greatest movement from west to east. The reason was the ''Harle Seegatt'', which continuously eroded the western tip of the island. The western tip of the island was not protected from erosion until the 1960s, when groynes and a concrete barrier were built. The longest groyne runs from the western end of Wangerooge to just in front of the eastern tip of Spiekeroog and poses a not insignificant hazard for shipping because it cannot be crossed at high tide. Wangerooge
Wangerooge is one of the 32 Frisian Islands in the North Sea located close to the coasts of the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. It is also a municipality in the district of Friesland in Lower Saxony in Germany. Wangerooge is one of the East Frisian Islands. It is the easternmost and smallest of the inhabited islands in this group (according to some other measurements, Baltrum is the smallest) and the only one that belonged to the historical district of Oldenburg between 1815 and 1947, whereas Borkum, Juist, Norderney, Baltrum, Langeoog and Spiekeroog always belonged to the county of Ostfriesland. Langeoog
Langeoog ( nds, Langeoog) is one of the seven inhabited East Frisian Islands at the edge of the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea in the southern North Sea, located between Baltrum Island (west), and Spiekeroog (east). It is also a municipality in the district of Wittmund in Lower Saxony, Germany. The name ''Langeoog'' means ''Long Island'' in the Low German dialect. Geography Langeoog's beach is long. Langeoog's actual size depends on the level of tide, which rises and falls about in 6 hours. Geology Langeoog is geologically nothing but sand. Rainwater that falls into the sand has a lower density than saltwater, which makes a kind of freshwater bubble float over the saltwater surrounding and deep under the island. Wittmund (district)
Wittmund is a ''Landkreis'' (district) in the northwestern part of Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated in East Frisia, on the North Sea coast. Neighboring districts are (from the east clockwise) Friesland, Leer and Aurich. Geography The district contains part of the Wadden Sea and of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park
The Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park (german: Nationalpark Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer) was established in 1986 and embraces the East Frisian Islands, mudflats and salt marshes between the Bay of Dollart on the border with the Netherlands in the west and Cuxhaven as far as the Outer Elbe shipping channel in the east. The national park has an area of about . The National Park organisation is located in Wilhelmshaven. Lower Saxony (german: Niedersachsen ; nds, Neddersassen; stq, Läichsaksen) is a German state (') in northwestern Germany. Johannes Rau
Johannes Rau (; 16 January 193127 January 2006) was a German politician (SPD). He was the president of Germany from 1 July 1999 until 30 June 2004 and the minister president of North Rhine-Westphalia from 20 September 1978 to 9 June 1998. In the latter role, he also served as president of the Bundesrat in 1982/83 and in 1994/95. Education and work Rau was born in the Barmen part of Wuppertal, Rhine Province, as the third of five children. His family was strongly Protestant.
