Sphenocichla Humei
The Sikkim wedge-billed babbler or blackish-breasted babbler (''Stachyris humei'') is a species of bird in the Old World babbler family (Timaliidae). It is named for the Indian state of Sikkim. It is found in the Indian subcontinent and nearby parts of Southeast Asia. Its range includes Bhutan, India, Myanmar, and Nepal. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. It is becoming rare due to habitat loss. Systematics This species described by Louis Mandelli based on specimens from Sikkim and placed in the genus ''Heterorhynchus'' which was however preoccupied leading to it briefly being placed in the genus ''Stachyrirhynchus'' by Hume. However the genus ''Sphenocichla'' was erected before this by Godwin-Austen and Lord Tweeddale for the Manipur or Cachar wedge-billed babbler and this species was moved to the genus ''Sphenocichla''. Louis Mandelli
Louis Hildebrand Mandelli (1833–1880) was an Italian settler in India, a tea planter and amateur zoologist and ornithologist. Living in Darjeeling and collecting specimens of birds and animals around Sikkim, he discovered many species from the region and several were named after him. He is honoured in the names '' Locustella mandelli'', Mandelli's Snowfinch and Mandelli's mouse-eared bat. Biography It is surmised that he may have been born Louis Castelnuovo, from an aristocratic Maltese family, and that his father Jerome took up his mother's family name possibly to get away from an association with Giuseppe Garibaldi. Mandelli obtained a contract as a manager for Lebong and Minchu Tea Company at Darjeeling at the end of 1864. He married Ann Jones at Darjeeling on 21 January 1865. The tea plantation was taken over by the Land Mortgage Bank of India around 1868 and Mandelli also became in-charge of Mineral Spring. ''Stachyris'' is a genus of passerine birds in the Old World babbler family Timaliidae. Taxonomy The genus ''Stachyris'' was introduced in 1844 in an article by the English zoologist Edward Blyth in which he quotes a diagnosis by Brian Houghton Hodgson. Allan Octavian Hume
Allan Octavian Hume, CB ICS (4 June 1829 – 31 July 1912) was a British civil servant, political reformer, ornithologist and botanist who worked in British India. He was the founder of the Indian National Congress. A notable ornithologist, Hume has been called "the Father of Indian Ornithology" and, by those who found him dogmatic, "the Pope of Indian Ornithology". As an administrator of Etawah, he saw the Indian Rebellion of 1857 as a result of misgovernance and made great efforts to improve the lives of the common people.
