Spencerville, Ontario
The village of Spencerville is a rural community located in Eastern Ontario, within Edwardsburgh/Cardinal township in the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. The village lies about 80 kilometers southwest of downtown Ottawa on Highway 416. The South Nation River runs through the village. Credit for the village's founding is given to David Spencer, for whom the village is named. Spencer's father built the first mill there in 1811 which inspired further settlement, and a village gradually grew surrounding the property. Spencerville is a historical village with many old houses, churches, farms, cemeteries, and other buildings dating back to the 1800s. The most notable old structure is the Spencerville Mill, a stone gristmill on the site of the Spencer family's original mill. Edwardsburgh/Cardinal
Edwardsburgh/Cardinal is a township in the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville of eastern Ontario, Canada. Edwardsburgh township was first surveyed in 1783, and incorporated in 1850. The township was part of the historical Grenville County before it merged with Leeds County to form the United Counties in the 19th century. The Township of Edwardsburgh/Cardinal was formed on January 1, 2001, through the amalgamation of Edwardsburgh Township with the Village of Cardinal. It is a historical community with many old homes and buildings; including one-room school houses, grist mills, and churches. The United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, commonly known as Leeds and Grenville, is a county in Ontario, Canada, in the Eastern Ontario subregion of Southern Ontario. Highway 416 (Ontario)
King's Highway 416, commonly referred to as Highway 416 and as the Veterans Memorial Highway, is a 400-series highway in the Canadian province of Ontario that connects the Trans-Canada Highway ( Highway 417) in Ottawa with Highway 401 between Brockville and Cornwall. The freeway acts as an important trade corridor from Interstate 81 between New York and Eastern Ontario via Highway 401, as well as the fastest link between Ottawa and Toronto. Highway 416 passes through a largely rural area, except near its northern terminus where it enters the suburbs of Ottawa. South Nation River
The South Nation River is a river in Eastern Ontario, Canada. It springs from forests and marshes located north of Brockville and it flows northeast to empty into the Ottawa River north of Plantagenet. Shows the river's course highlighted on a topographic map. Its watershed covers . This river is called the "South Nation River" to distinguish it from a river in Quebec north of the Ottawa River called the Petite-Nation River or ''rivière Petite-Nation''. The names of both rivers are derived from the French name for the native people of this area, the Weskarini. The area surrounding the river, originally covered with white pine, is now mainly used for agriculture. The river drains an almost flat plain, and its lack of gradient makes it prone to flooding. Spencerville Fair
The Spencerville Fair, also known as "The Biggest-Little Fair in Eastern Ontario" is an annual celebration of harvest which unites the surrounding community of Spencerville, Ontario every second weekend in September. The first fair was held in December 1855 on the south side of the South Nation River. Today, the fair is held at the fair grounds in the middle of the village. These grounds contain a grandstand, race track, various show barns and a multimillion-dollar community building. The Spencerville fair is a much-anticipated event attended by over 30,000 people annually. Attractions include the many rides and games, the Saturday parade, numerous exhibits, the giant pumpkin contest, teen and adult dances, cotton candy, bands, horse races, barbecues, midway, socials, and the fair Royalty Show, which consist of the Little Sir, Little Miss, Junior Ambassador and Ambassador competitions. Bytown And Prescott Railway
The Bytown and Prescott Railway (B&PR) was a railway joining Ottawa (then called Bytown) with Prescott, Ontario, Prescott on the Saint Lawrence River. The company was incorporated in 1850, and the first train ran from Prescott into Bytown on Christmas Day, 1854. The 84 km (52 mile) railway, Ottawa's first to outside markets, was initially used to ship lumber collected on the Ottawa River for further shipping along the St. Lawrence to markets in the United States and Montreal. Bytown became Ottawa in 1855, and the railway changed its name to match, becoming the Ottawa and Prescott Railway (O&PR). The operating company went bankrupt and re-formed in 1866 as the St. Lawrence and Ottawa Railway. Kemptville is a community located in the Municipality of North Grenville in Eastern Ontario, Canada in the northernmost part of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. It is located approximately south of the downtown core of Ottawa and south of the Rideau River. The community can be accessed by Highway 416, also known as the Veterans Memorial Highway, which was completed in 1999, and from Leeds and Grenville Road 43 (formerly Highway 43).
