Speicher is a municipality in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, in Switzerland. History Speicher is first mentioned in 1309 as ''Spicher''. The name originated in the Middle Ages, during the heyday of the Abbey of Saint Gall. At that time the village church served as a granary of the monastery. The first battle of the Appenzell Wars was fought at the village of Vögelinsegg, near Speicher in 1403. A monument to the battle, a pointing Appenzell farmer with a morning star, was built in 1903 on the ridge of Vögelinsegg. A right of way had to be blasted through the rock at Vögelinsegg to lay the track for the ''Trogenerbahn'' in 1900. Geography Speicher has an area, , of . Of this area, 54.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while 28.6% is forested. Speicher, Germany
Speicher is a town in the county of Bitburg-Prüm, in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is situated in the Eifel, on the river Kyll, approximately 10 km south-east of Bitburg and 29 km north of Trier. It has 3,624 inhabitants (Dec. 2020) and is next to the Spangdahlem Air Base which is home of the 52d Fighter Wing. There is a small monument to the men who died in the First and Second World Wars at the western end of the town. East of the monument is an open area for shopping and other events. Directly to the south is the parish church of St. Philip and St. James. Transport Roads There is a direct link from Speicher to Beilingen, Preist, Dudeldorf, Herforst, and Trier. Speicher Massacre
The Camp Speicher massacre occurred on 12 June 2014, when the Islamic State killed between 1,095 to 1,700 Iraqi cadets in an attack on Camp Speicher in Tikrit, Iraq. At the time of the massacre, there were between 5,000 and 100,000 unarmed cadets in the camp, and ISIL fighters selected the Shias and non-Muslims for execution. It is the second deadliest act of terrorism in history, only surpassed by the September 11 attacks. The Iraqi government blamed the massacre on the Islamic State. Attack Several survivors later testified that their senior officers in the camp had forced them to leave the camp.
