Speed Skating At The 1952 Winter Olympics – Men's 500 Metres
The 500 metres speed skating event was part of the speed skating at the 1952 Winter Olympics programme. The competition was held on Saturday, 16 February 1952, at 3p.m. Forty-one speed skaters from 14 nations competed. Medalists Records These were the standing world and Olympic records (in seconds) prior to the 1952 Winter Olympics. ''(*)'' The record was set in a high altitude venue (more than 1000 metres above sea level) and on naturally frozen ice. Results The current world record holder Yuri Sergeev did not compete as the Soviet Union did not participate in Winter Games before 1956. Finn Helgesen did not receive a bronze medal because he was paired up with Arne Johansen and finished behind his opponent. Bislett Stadium ( no, Bislett stadion) is a sports stadium in Oslo, Norway. Bislett is Norway's most well known sports arena internationally, with 15 speed skating world records and more than 50 track and field world records having been set here. The original stadium was demolished in 2004 and construction of a new stadium was completed by the summer of 2005. The New Bislett Stadium was designed by C.F. Møller Architects. History Bislett Stadium lies on the site of a 19th-century brick works, which was bought by the Municipality of Kristiania (Oslo) in 1898, and turned into a sports field in 1908. The merchant, speed skater, gymnast and sports organizer Martinus Lørdahl was instrumental in facilitating the construction of the first bleachers, begun in 1917 and completed in 1922 along with the new club house. Toivo Salonen
Toivo Kostia Salonen (21 May 1933 – 28 October 2019) was a former speed skater from Finland. He was born in Pälkäne. Medals Toivo Salonen had most of his successes on a national level, becoming Finnish Allround Champion in 1954, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1961, winning Finnish silver in 1953, 1955, and 1962, and taking bronze in 1963 and 1964. But Salonen also competed internationally for 12 years and participated in 4 Winter Olympics. At the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo, he won bronze on the 1,500 m. So far (including the 2006 Winter Olympics), Salonen is the last Finnish male speed skater to have won an Olympic medal – the last Finnish female speed skater so far being Kaija Mustonen in 1968. Robert Emmett "Bobby" Fitzgerald (October 3, 1923 in Minneapolis, Minnesota – April 22, 2005 in Luverne, Minnesota) was an American speed skater who competed in the 1948 Winter Olympics and in the 1952 Winter Olympics. He was a member of the US Army Air Corps in World War II, and was discharged due to injuries sustained in a plane crash. He was a Feb., 1947 graduate of St. Thomas College, when he won the national and North American Speed Skating crowns. Later that year, he skated in the "Winter Carnival" held at Como Park, in St. Paul, which was the US Olympic trials for speed skating. His 1st place there was enough to qualify him for the seven man team. In 1948 he won a silver medal in the 500 metres event. He also finished 28th in the 1500 metres competition. Frank Stack (speed Skater)
Frank Stack (January 1, 1906 – January 25, 1987) was a Canadian speed skater. He competed at the 1932, 1948 and 1952 Olympics and won a bronze medal in the 10000 m in 1932, placing fourth in the 500 m and 1500 m and seventh in the 5000 m events. He missed the 1936 Games due to lack of funds to travel to Berlin. Stack took up skating at the age of 13, following his father Jack, who was also a competitive speed skater. Frank was the Western Canadian Junior Champion in 1919–1923 and senior champion in 1924–1929. In 1931, 1932 and 1938 he won North American Indoor Championships. He semi-retired in 1954, but returned to competitions in 1966, aged 60, and had five podium finishes at the Canadian Indoor Championships.
