Speed Skating At The 2022 Winter Olympics – Women's Mass Start
The women's mass start competition in speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 19 February, at the National Speed Skating Oval ("Ice Ribbon") in Beijing. Irene Schouten of the Netherlands won the event, her third gold and fourth overall medal at these Olympics. Ivanie Blondin of Canada won her first individual Olympic medal, the silver. Francesca Lollobrigida of Italy won the bronze medal. The defending champion was Nana Takagi. She entered the competition, but fell in her semifinal and did not qualify to the final. The silver medalist, Kim Bo-reum, and the bronze medalist, Schouten, qualified for the Olympics as well. Marijke Groenewoud was the 2021 World Single Distances champion in mass start, with Blondin and Schouten being the silver and bronze medalists, respectively. Speed skating is a competitive form of ice skating in which the competitors racing, race each other in travelling a certain distance on Ice skate, skates. Types of speed skating are long track speed skating, short track speed skating, and marathon speed skating. In the Olympic Games, long-track speed skating is usually referred to as just "speed skating", while short-track speed skating is known as "short track". The International Skating Union (ISU), the governing body of competitive ice sports, refers to long track as "speed skating" and short track as "short track skating". Valérie Maltais
Valérie Maltais (born July 4, 1990) is a Canadian short track speed skater and speed skater. She has won six world championship medals, including finishing second overall in 2012. Career Early career She began skating at the age of 6 and, in 2009, was the Canadian Champion in the 1500m. In that same year, she received a bronze medal in relay at the World Short Track Championships. She was set to compete for Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics in the Ladies' 3000m relay. Maltais did not compete in the relay however but did compete in the 1,500 m where she finished fourteenth. Post-Olympics, Maltais succeeded at the 2012 World Championships. She won a bronze medal in a photo finish in the 1,000 m. With her success, she qualified for the 3,000 m superfinal, where she lapped her entire opposition and won the gold medal. Giorgia Birkeland
Giorgia Birkeland (born June 14, 2002) is an Italian-born American speed skater. She competed in the women's mass start event at the 2022 Winter Olympics. Speed skating career Birkeland started speed skating at the age of 8 in her hometown of White Bear Lake, Minnesota. In 2020, she made the national long-distance track team and competed at the World Junior Long Track Championships in Poland, finishing 11th place. Birkeland later participated at the AmCup, placing fourth in the mass start event and fourth in the 3000m event. She made the national team again for the 2021–22 season and placed seventh in the team pursuit event at the World Cup. At the 2022 US trials, Birkeland won the final qualifying race and was given Team USA's discretionary spot for the Winter Olympics in Beijing. Laura Isabel Gómez Quintero, also simply known as Laura Gómez (born 17 July 1990), is a Colombian female speed skater who was a professional roller skater during her early career. She took the sport of speed skating only in late July 2017 and broke several Colombian national records for women within six months after engaging in speed skating before impressing the selectors to name herself at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Claudia Pechstein (born 22 February 1972) is a German speed skater. She has won five Olympic gold medals. With a total of nine Olympic medals, five gold, two silver and two bronze, she was the most successful Olympic speed skater, male or female, of all-time, until the gold medal of Ireen Wüst in the 2018 Winter Olympics of PyeongChang, and also the most successful German Winter Olympian of all-time.
