The Olympic Oval in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is North America's first covered speed skating oval; it was built for the 1988 Winter Olympics and opened on September 27, 1987.1988 Winter Olympics official report.

Bonnie Blair
Bonnie Kathleen Blair (born March 18, 1964) is a retired American speed skater. She is one of the top skaters of her era, and one of the most decorated athletes in Olympic history. Blair competed for the United States in four Olympics, winning five gold medals and one bronze medal. Blair made her Olympic debut in Sarajevo in 1984 where she finished eighth in the 500 meters. At the time, Blair trained in both short-track and long-track speed skating. She won the 1986 short-track world championship. Blair returned to the Olympics in 1988 competing in long-track at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. There she won her first Olympic gold medal in the 500 meters and a bronze medal in the 1,000 meter. Blair won two gold medals in the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville and her final two Olympic gold medals at the 1994 Lillehammer games. Katie Class (born March 24, 1963) is an American speed skater. She competed in two events at the 1984 Winter Olympics and three events at the 1988 Winter Olympics. She later became a director for USA Speedskating. Biography Class was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota in 1963, and was the youngest of seven. She began skating when she was five years old. Class went to Morehead State University. She skated on the US national team for most of the 1980s, winning five medals at the World Cup and a bronze at the 1987 World Championships. Class took part at two editions of the Winter Olympics. At the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Class took part in the women's 500 metres and women's 1,000 metres events, with her best result of tenth place in the 500 metres. Erwina Lilia Ryś-Ferens ( Ryś; 19 January 1955 – 20 April 2022) was a Polish speed skater. Career She competed in four consecutive Winter Olympics from 1976 to 1988 in all distances from 500 m to 3000 m. She reached fifth place on three occasions: in 1980 (3000 m), in 1984 (1500 m) and in 1988 (3000 m). She won a silver and a bronze medal at the World Junior Speed Skating Championships in 1974 and 1975, respectively.
