Speed Skating At The 1960 Winter Olympics – Men's 10,000 Metres
The 10,000 metres speed skating event was part of the speed skating at the 1960 Winter Olympics programme. It was the last speed skating contest at this Games. The competition was held on the Squaw Valley Olympic Skating Rink and for the first time at the Olympics on artificially frozen ice. It was held on Saturday, February 27, 1960. Thirty speed skaters from 15 nations competed. Medalists Records These were the standing world and Olympic records (in minutes) prior to the 1960 Winter Olympics. ''(*)'' The record was set on naturally frozen ice. ''(**)'' The record was set in a high altitude venue (more than 1000 metres above sea level) and on naturally frozen ice. The Squaw Valley Olympic Skating Rink was a temporary venue constructed for the 1960 Winter Olympics in Olympic Valley, California (which was known at that time as "Squaw Valley"). Kurt Stille
Kurt Robert Stille (born 19 November 1934) is a former Danish speed skater, who competed at top international levels from 1957 to 1964. He was born in Copenhagen, but lives in Norway. He participated in both the 1960 Winter Olympics and 1964 Winter Olympics. Stille was the only Danish participant in the 1960 Olympics. His 9th place in the 1964 10,000-m was his best result; this was also the best result by any Dane in an individual event in the Winter Olympics history until 2018, when Viktor Hald Thorup placed fifth in the men's mass start speed skating. At the end of his career, Stille held the Danish speedskating records at all distances. Kees Broekman
Cornelis "Kees" Broekman (2 July 1927 – 8 November 1992) was a Dutch speed skater. At the 1952 Olympics in Oslo Broekman was silver medalist on both the 5000 meter and the 10000 meter, the first ever Winter Olympic medals for the Netherlands. He won a silver medal at the World Allround Speed Skating Championships for Men 1949, and became European champion 1953. In the 1950s Broekman moved to Norway, where he competed until the 1960 Summer Olympics.
