U.S. Route 81 has eight special routes. Three are in Texas, one in Oklahoma, two in Kansas, and two in North Dakota. Texas There are officially three business routes of US 81 designated by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Additional former alignments of US 81 are designated as state highway loops and state highway spurs, while others became business routes of Interstate 35 (I-35) after US 81 was eliminated south of Fort Worth in 1991. San Antonio Loop 353 is the former routing of US 81 in southern San Antonio, formed in 1961 when US 81 was rerouted onto the I-35 freeway to the east. In road transportation in the United States, a special route is a road in a numbered highway system that diverts a specific segment of related traffic away from another road. They are featured in many highway systems; most are found in the Interstate Highway System, U.S. highway system, and several state highway systems. Each type of special route possesses generally defined characteristics and has a defined relationship with its parent route. Typically, special routes share a route number with a dominant route, often referred as the "parent" or "mainline", and are given either a descriptor which may be used either before or after the route name, such as Alternate or Business, or a letter suffix that is attached to the route number. K-4 (Kansas Highway)
K-4 is the longest designated state highway in Kansas, at . It begins north of Scott City at U.S. Route 83 (US-83) and travels eastward to US-59 near Nortonville in northeast Kansas. A segment of the highway in Saline County overlaps Interstate 135 (I-135) and US-81, and a section in Topeka runs concurrent with I-70. It also intersects several other major highways, including US-283 in Ransom, US-183 in La Crosse, US-281 in Hoisington, US-77 in Herington, I-470 and US-75 in Topeka, and US-24 northeast of Topeka. I-135, which is signed as north–south, runs between I-35 and the Kansas Turnpike in Wichita north to I-70, U.S. Highway 40 (US-40), and US-81 in Salina. When two roadways share the same right-of-way, it is sometimes called a common section or commons. K-61 (Kansas Highway)
K-61 is a north–south state highway in central Kansas. K-61's southern terminus is at U.S. Route 54 (US-54) and US-400 on the east side of Pratt. The northern terminus is at Interstate 135 (I-135) and US-81 south of McPherson. The highway travels mostly through rural areas; however, it does pass through South Hutchinson and Hutchinson, where it intersects K-14, K-96, and US-50. K-61 is signed as a north–south but runs in southwest to northeast direction. K-61 was established as a state highway by 1928. Throughout the 1940s and into 1950, the highway's alignment was straightened between Pratt and Hutchinson. In 1957, K-17 was truncated to end in Hutchinson.
