The Serbian Armed Forces ( sr, Војска Србије, Vojska Srbije) is the military of Serbia. The President of Serbia acts as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, while administration and defence policy is carried out by the Government of Serbia, Government through the Ministry of Defence (Serbia), Ministry of Defence. The Special Anti-Terrorist Unit ( sr-cyr, Специјална антитерористичка јединица, САЈ) is the police tactical unit of the Serbian Police. History The Special Police Force ( sr-cyr, Јединица милиције за специјална дејства) of the Republican Secretary for the Interior of the Socialist Republic of Serbia was established on 18 December 1978. Gendarmery (Serbia)
The Gendarmery ( sr, Жандармерија, Žandarmerija) is the national gendarmerie force of the Republic of Serbia. It is under the authority of the Police Directorate of the Serbian Ministry of Interior and was formed on 28 June 2001, after the disbandment of the Special Police Units (PJP). Gendarmery in Serbia existed in previous form from 1860 to 1920. As a special unit inside Serbian police, its role can be compared to those of Russian OMON and former Ukrainian Berkut units. As of 2017, Gendarmery consists of about 2,800 members. The Command of the Gendarmery is in Belgrade. The Battalion for Special Operations "Griffins" ( sr, Батаљон за специјалне операције "Грифони", Bataljon za specijalne operacije "Grifoni") is part of 72nd Brigade for Special Operations of the Serbian Armed Forces. The Вattalion for Special Operations "Hawks" ( sr, Батаљон за специјалне операције "Соколови", Bataljon za specijalne operacije "Sokolovi"), is a battalion within the 72nd Brigade for Special Operations of the Serbian Armed Forces. Formed in 1992 as a military police battalion for counter-terrorist operations within the newly formed 72nd Special Brigade, became counter-terrorist battalion "Hawks" in 2006 within the Special Brigade and with re-establishment of 72nd Brigade for Special Operations it was renamed to battalion for the special operations "Hawks" with broader range of tasks (not just counter-terrorism). The 63rd Parachute Brigade ( sr, 63. падобранска бригада, 63. padobranska brigada) is an airborne and special reconnaissance unit, one of two special forces brigades (other being 72nd Brigade for Special Operations) of the Serbian Armed Forces. Counter-Terrorist Unit (Serbia)
The Counter-Terrorist Unit ( sr, Противтерористичка јединица / Protivteroristička jedinica, abbr. ПTJ / PTJ) was a police tactical unit of the Serbian Police. The PTJ was initially established within the Gendarmery of the Police and in April 2007 was made an independent unit within the Police Directorate of the Police. As its name states, the PTJ was oriented towards anti-terror operations as well as securing and maintaining the internal security of Serbia.
