Special forces and special operations forces (SOF) are military units trained to conduct special operations. NATO has defined special operations as "military activities conducted by specially designated, organized, selected, trained and equipped forces using unconventional techniques and modes of employment". Special forces emerged in the early 20th century, with a significant growth in the field during the Second World War, when "every major army involved in the fighting" created formations devoted to special operations behind enemy lines. ЈСО or JSO) or Special Operations Unit, also known as Red Berets (by berets; sr, Црвене беретке, Crvene beretke, links=no) or Frankies (by Franko Simatović; sr, Френкијевци, Frenkijevci, links=no), was an elite special forces police unit of the FR Yugoslav State Security Service (RDB). The (''Special Operations Unit'' – UOE) was the elite special operations force of the Spanish Navy and Spanish Marines, marines from 1967 to 2009. In June 2009, the unit was absorbed into the newly formed Special Naval Warfare Force (), which inherited the reputation and which continues the record of the UOE.
