The speaker of the House of Representatives ( ar, رئيس مجلس النواب) presides over the sessions of the House of Representatives of Egypt with functions similar to that of a speaker in other countries. In case of the vacancy of the presidential office or the permanent incapacitation of the president, the speaker of the People's Assembly shall temporarily assume the presidency for a maximum period of 60 days. Following the 2011 Egyptian revolution and the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak and arrest of Speaker of the Assembly Ahmad Fathi Sorour, one of the leaders of the National Democratic Party, Parliament was temporarily dissolved. Hanafy Ali El-Gebali is an Egyptian politician. He is the president of the Egyptian parliament of the House of Representatives since October 2020. He was elected as Speaker of the House of Representatives on 12 January 2021. El-Gebali previously served as chief justice of the Supreme Constitutional Court. The House of Representatives ( ar, مجلس النواب, Maglis El Nowwab) is the lower house of Egypt's bicameral parliament. Formation of the House The 2014 constitution that was passed in the 2014 constitutional referendum has put into place the following rules: the House that is elected following the ratification of the constitution must have at least 450 members. In addition, prospective members must be Egyptian, must be at least 25 years old and must hold an education certificate. Abdel Latif Boghdadi or Abd el-Latif el-Baghdadi (20 September 1917 – 9 September 1999) ( ar, عبد اللطيف البغدادي) was an Egyptian politician, senior air force officer, and judge. An original member of the Free Officers Movement which overthrew the monarchy in Egypt in the 1952 Revolution, Boghdadi later served as Gamal Abdel Nasser's vice president. The speaker of a deliberative assembly, especially a legislative body, is its presiding officer, or the chair. The title was first used in 1377 in England. Muhammad Hosni El Sayed Mubarak, (; 4 May 1928 – 25 February 2020) was an Egyptian politician and military officer who served as the fourth president of Egypt from 1981 to 2011. Ahmad Fathi Sorour (born 9 July 1932) is an Egyptian politician who was the Speaker of the People's Assembly of Egypt from 1990 until the Egyptian Revolution of 2011. Previously he served in the government as Minister of Education from 1986 to 1990. Sorour was first elected to the People's Assembly in April 1989, and he was elected as Speaker in November 1990.
