Spartan School Of Aeronautics
Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology (Spartan) is a private for-profit aviation college in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It was originally established to provide pilot and technicians for Spartan Aircraft Company but outlived its parent company and continues to train pilots and mechanics into the 21st Century. The main campus is adjacent to Tulsa International Airport, with another campus used for flight training at Richard Lloyd Jones Jr. Airport. In May, 2014 Spartan acquired the Crimson Technical College located in Inglewood, California. Crimson Technical College was founded in 1930, originally called The California Flyers, Inc. and eventually became the Northrop University. On March 31, 2015, this campus took on the Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology name and added a branch located in Riverside, CA. Mary Riddle, also known as Kus-de-cha or Kingfisher, (April 22, 1902 – October 25, 1981) was the second Native American woman to earn a pilot's license, with Bessie Coleman being the first. Soon after earning her pilot's license she also earned her commercial license. Early life Riddle was a member of the Clatsop Tribe in Oregon and the Quinault Indian Nation in Washington. She was the daughter of Albert "Doc" Riddell, and had two brothers, John and Valentine. Her grandmother gave her the name Kus-de-cha after noting that her cries sounded like a kingfisher's call. On the way home from school, an eleven-year-old Riddle saw her first plane and was mesmerized. From that day forward, she went to every airshow she could. Robin Olds (July 14, 1922 – June 14, 2007) was an American fighter pilot and general officer in the United States Air Force (USAF). Alvin Melvin "Tex" Johnston (August 18, 1914 – October 29, 1998) was an American jet-age test pilot for Bell Aircraft and the Boeing Company. Early life Johnston was born August 18, 1914, in Admire, Kansas, to farmers Alva and Ella Johnston. He had his first airplane ride in 1925, at 11 years old, when a barnstormer landed near his family farm. At the age of 15, Johnston used his newspaper route money to purchase a wrecked Cessna glider. After repairing the glider, Johnston's father would pull it behind their car and Johnston would release the tow cable and glide to a landing in a nearby field.
