Spain In The Eurovision Song Contest 2009
Spain participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 with the song "La noche es para mí" written by Irini Michas, Dimitri Stassos, Jason Gill and Felipe Pedroso. The song was performed by Soraya. The Spanish broadcaster Televisión Española (TVE) organised the national final ''Eurovisión 2009: El retorno'' in order to select the Spanish entry for the 2009 contest in Moscow, Russia. The national final consisted of three semi-finals and a final and involved 30 artists and songs. Ten entries ultimately qualified to compete in the televised final where an in-studio jury and a public televote selected "La noche es para mí" performed by Soraya as the winner. As a member of the " Big Four", Spain automatically qualified to compete in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest. Performing as the closing entry during the show in position 25, Spain placed twenty-fourth out of the 25 participating countries with 23 points. Soraya Arnelas Rubiales (; born 13 September 1982), better known by her stage name Soraya, is a Spanish singer. Soraya represented Spain at the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in Moscow, Russia with the song "La noche es para mí" finishing 23rd with 23 points. Biography Early life Arnelas was born in Valencia de Alcántara, Cáceres, Spain on 13 September 1982. At the age of 11, she left for Madrid. She wanted to study drama but soon started working as a flight attendant for Iberworld, where she travelled around the world. The United Kingdom held a televised national pre-selection broadcast on BBC1 to choose the song that would go to the Eurovision Song Contest 1969 with Scottish singer Lulu chosen to represent the UK. Before Eurovision A Song for Europe 1969 After performing all six songs weekly on her eponymous TV series ''Lulu'', the final was held on 22 February 1969 and presented by Michael Aspel. "Baila el Chiki-chiki" (; "Dance the Chiki-chiki") is a novelty song by Rodolfo Chikilicuatre, the entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, held in Belgrade, Serbia. The song was pre-qualified for the final round where it scored 55 points in total, placing 16th. Background The song is a parody of reggaeton music filled with jokes and references to the ''¿Por qué no te callas?'' incident between Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez, the king of Spain Juan Carlos I and Spanish prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. Reportedly the lyrics of the song changed due to the political allusions, as the EBU does not allow political remarks in any song in the competition.
