Alexis Soyer
Alexis Benoît Soyer (4 February 18105 August 1858) was a French chef who became the most celebrated cook in Victorian England. He also tried to alleviate suffering of the Irish poor in the Great Irish Famine (1845–1849), and contributed a penny for the relief of the poor for every copy sold of his pamphlet ''The Poor Man's Regenerator'' (1847). He worked to improve the food provided to British soldiers in the Crimean War. A variant of the field stove he invented at that time, known as the "Soyer stove", remained in use with the British army until 1982. Raphael Zalman Soyer (December 25, 1899 – November 4, 1987) was a Russian-born American painter, draftsman, and printmaker. Soyer was referred to as an American scene painter. He is identified as a Social Realist because of his interest in men and women viewed in contemporary settings which included the streets, subways, salons and artists' studios of New York City. He also wrote several books on his life and art. His brothers Moses Soyer and Isaac Soyer were also painters. Early life and education He was born as Raphael Schoar. Biography He was born as Moses Schoar and both he and his identical twin brother, Raphael, were born in Borisoglebsk, Tambov, a southern province of Russia on December 25, 1899. Their father, Abraham Shauer, a Hebrew scholar, writer and teacher, raised his six children in an intellectual environment in which much emphasis was placed on academic and artistic pursuits. Their mother, Bella, was an embroiderer. Their cousin was painter and meteorologist Joshua Zalman Holland. Due to the many difficulties for the Jewish population in the late Russian Empire, the Soyer family was forced to emigrate in 1912 to the United States, where they ultimately settled in the Bronx. Mustafa Tunç Soyer (born 1959) is a Turkish politician from the Republican People's Party (CHP) who currently serves as the Mayor of İzmir, Turkey's third largest city. Elizabeth Emma Soyer, née Jones (5 September 1813 – 30 August 1842) was an English oil painter, known as Emma Jones or Emma Soyer. Biography Elizabeth Emma Jones was born in London in 1813, and was instructed in French, Italian, and music. At a very early age she became a pupil of the Belgian painter François Simonau (1783–1859), who in 1820 married her mother, Mrs. Jones. Finding that Emma had talents for drawing, Simoneau devoted the whole of his time to her instruction, and before the age of twelve she "had drawn more than a hundred portraits from life with gret fidelity". Ferdi Sabit Soyer (; born March 5, 1952) is a former Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and former Leader of Republican Turkish Party (CTP). Soyer, a former union leader, has been a member of the TRNC parliament since 1985 (except for a three-year absence between 1990 and 1993). He was named successor to Talat's former post of TRNC Prime Minister on April 25, 2005. Soyer was born in Nicosia in 1952, attending secondary school in Cyprus, then continued towards a degree in medicine from Turkey. Sevil Soyer (born 1950) is a Turkish interdisciplinary artist. Soyer has had solo exhibitions and group exhibitions along with several installations in Turkey and the United States. Early life She was born in Turkey and graduated in 1979 from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. Career In 1993 Soyer and Onay Sozer, a philosophy professor in Istanbul University, worked together on the manifesto of “Inter-disciplinary-art”. In 1994 Soyer created the “Ah Guzel Istanbul” (Interdisciplinary Art Exhibition) with 40 Turkish artists. This exhibition was supported by the Ministry of Culture of Turkey. David Soyer
David Soyer (February 24, 1923February 25, 2010) was an American cellist. He was born in Philadelphia and began playing the piano at the age of nine. At 11, he started the cello. One of his first teachers was Diran Alexanian. Later on he studied with Emanuel Feuermann and Pablo Casals. He debuted with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy in 1942, playing Ernest Bloch's ''Schelomo''. Chamber music was a special love of his. He was a founding member of the Guarneri Quartet in 1964 and played with them until retiring from the quartet in 2002.
