Soviet Women's Handball Championship
The Soviet Women's Handball Championship (''Чемпионат СССР по гандболу среди женщин'') was the premier women's handball championship in the Soviet Union. Founded in 1962, it last took place in 1992 following the state's collapse. Luch Moscow (previously Trud) and Žalgiris Kaunas were early powerhouses of the championship. Spartak Kiev subsequently dominated the championship for two decades, with twenty titles in a row between 1969 and 1988. The four last editions were won by Kuban Krasnodar and Rostselmash. Avtomobilist Baku was the championship's runner-up a record 9 times, but wasn't able to win it. The Soviet Championship was arguably one of the top women's handball competitions in the world. Spartak Kiev extended its dominance to the European Cup with 13 titles, and Avtomobilist Baku, Eglė Vilnius, Kuban Krasnodar, Luch Moscow, Rostselmash and Žalgiris Kaunas also won international competitions. Team Handball
Handball (also known as team handball, European handball or Olympic handball) is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six outcourt players and a goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the other team. A standard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes, and the team that scores more goals wins. Modern handball is played on a court of , with a goal in the middle of each end. The goals are surrounded by a zone where only the defending goalkeeper is allowed; goals must be scored by throwing the ball from outside the zone or while "diving" into it. The sport is usually played indoors, but outdoor variants exist in the forms of field handball, Czech handball (which were more common in the past) and beach handball. KSK Luch Moscow
KSK Luch Moscow is a Russian women's handball club from Moscow. Founded in 1959 as Trud Moscow, it took its current name in 1966. The team enjoyed its golden era in the 1960s, winning the third edition of the European Cup and five of the seven first editions of the Soviet Championship. Luch gradually declined in subsequent years, making it into the championship's top three for the last time in 1975. Following the break-up of the Soviet Union Luch has played in the Russian Super League. MRK Žalgiris Kaunas
Moterų Rankinio Klubas Žalgiris Kaunas is a Lithuanian women's handball club from Kaunas. A founding member of the European Cup in 1961, Žalgiris won three editions in a row between 1967 and 1969 in addition to two Soviet Championships, which makes it one of the most successful Lithuanian teams in overall international competitions. However the team declined subsequently, with Spartak Kyiv dominating both competitions for nearly two decades. HC Spartak Kyiv (ukrainian: ХК Спартак Київ) is a Ukrainian women's handball club from Kyiv. It used to be a member of the Spartak VSS during the Soviet era. History Spartak was arguably the best team in Europe between the 1970s and the late-1980s, with a record 13 European Cups in addition to twenty Soviet Championships in a row. HC Kuban Krasnodar is a Russian women's handball team from Krasnodar competing in the Russian Super League. Kuban enjoyed its golden era in the late 1980s, winning two Cup Winners' Cups in 1987 and 1988 by beating TSC Berlin and Vasas Budapest in the final, and reaching the 1990 European Cup's final, lost to Hypo Niederösterreich, after winning the 1989 Soviet Championship. Kuban also played a third unsuccessful Cup Winners' Cup final in 1989. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union Kuban won the transitional CIS Championship, but it hasn't been able to win the new Russian Super League to date. Rostov-Don (russian: Ростов-Дон) is a female handball team from Rostov-on-Don, Russia. Established in 1965, the club was called Rostselmash until 2002. Rostov-Don is competing in the Russian Super League. They have won the league seven times, in 1994, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022. The club have won the Women's EHF Cup in 2016–17, and was runner-up of the 2014–15 edition after losing the finals against the Danish team TTH Holstebro. In the 2017–18 EHF Champions League, the club reached the Final 4 tournament for the first time in the club's history, where they finished fourth. The Women's EHF Champions League is the competition for the top women's handball clubs in Europe, organised annually by the European Handball Federation (EHF). It is the most prestigious tournament for clubs, with the champions of Europe's top national leagues participating. Tournament structure Each year, the EHF publishes a ranking list of its member federations. The first 27 nations are allowed to participate in the tournament with their national champion. Eglė Vilnius
RK Eglė Vilnius, also known as Eglė-Šviesa for sponsorship reasons, is a women's handball club from Vilnius, Lithuania. The club has a rich history in both domestic and international competitions. In the Soviet era, Eglė Vilnius achieved great success, finishing third in the Soviet Championship in 1981 and 1987. The team also reached the final of the EHF Cup twice during this period, in 1982 and 1989. Unfortunately, they were unable to lift the trophy, losing to RK Trešnjevka and Chimistul Râmnicu Vâlcea, respectively. In 1988, Eglė Vilnius finally won their first major international title, the EHF Cup, by defeating Budućnost Titograd in the final. The European Handball Federation (EHF) is the umbrella organisation for European handball. Founded on 17 November 1991, it is made of 50 member federations and two associated federations (England and Scotland), and is headquartered in Vienna, Austria. History EHF was founded on 17 November 1991 in Berlin, Germany, although the first EHF Congress convened on 5 June 1992 and assigned EHF's headquarters to Vienna, Austria from 1 September that year.
