Southwark London Borough Council is the local authority for the London Borough of Southwark in London, England. The council is elected every four years. Since the last boundary changes in 2018, 63 councillors have been elected from 23 wards. Political control The first election to the council was held in 1964, initially operating as a shadow authority before the new system came into full effect in 1965. Southwark ( ) is a district of Central London situated on the south bank of the River Thames, forming the north-western part of the wider modern London Borough of Southwark. The district, which is the oldest part of South London, developed due to its position at the southern end of the early versions of London Bridge, the only crossing point for many miles. London's historic core, the City of London, lay north of the Bridge and for centuries the area of Southwark just south of the bridge was partially governed by the city. By the 12th century Southwark had been incorporated as an ancient borough, and this historic status is reflected in the alternative name of the area, as Borough. The ancient borough of Southwark's river frontage extended from the modern borough boundary, just to the west of by the Oxo Tower, to St Saviour's Dock (originally the mouth of the River Neckinger) in the east. Sally Keeble
Sally Curtis Keeble (born 13 October 1951) is a British Labour Party politician. She was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Northampton North from the 1997 to 2010 general elections, when she lost her seat to the Conservative Party candidate Michael Ellis. She had previously been Leader of Southwark Council from 1990 to 1993. Keeble stood as Labour's candidate for her former constituency in the three elections following her 2010 defeat, losing on all three occasions to Ellis. Early life Keeble went to the independent Cheltenham Ladies' College, and later attended St Hugh's College, Oxford, gaining a BA degree in Theology in 1973, and a BA in Sociology from the University of South Africa in 1981. Her father was the British diplomat Sir Curtis Keeble, a former ambassador to East Germany and the USSR. Leader Of The Council
In England, local authorities are required to adopt one of three types of executive arrangements, having either an "elected mayor and cabinet", a "leader and cabinet", or a "committee system". The type of arrangement used determines how decisions will be made within the council. In councils which use the elected mayor system, the mayor is directly elected by the electorate to provide political leadership for the council and has power to make executive decisions. In councils which use the leader and cabinet model (the most commonly used model), the elected councillors choose one of their number to be the "leader of the council", and that person provides political leadership and can make executive decisions. 2022 Southwark London Borough Council Election
The 2022 Southwark London Borough Council election is due to take place on 5 May 2022. All 63 members of Southwark London Borough Council will be elected. The election for Southwark London Borough Council took place on 3 May 2018, the same day as for other London Boroughs. All 63 seats were up for election. New boundaries were used, using 23 two- and three-member wards (there were previously 21 three-member wards), following a Local Government Boundary Commission for England review that concluded in 2016. 2010 Southwark London Borough Council Election
Elections for Southwark Council were held on 6 May 2010. The 2010 General Election and other local elections took place on the same day. In London council elections the entire council is elected every four years, opposed to some local elections where one councillor is elected every year for three of the four years. Southwark has 21 wards, each electing 3 councillors giving a total number of seats as 63. The Labour Party gained overall control, which they had previously had until 2002, replacing the previous Lib Dem-Conservative coalition. The Labour Party increased their vote substantially, which it was suggested was caused by the high turnout.
