Southport Light Rail Station
Southport light rail station is a major public transport interchange in the Gold Coast suburb of Southport, the Gold Coast's CBD. The Southport light rail station and the Southport bus station (located adjacent to light rail station) provide a bus and light rail interchange for the Gold Coast central business district. The station opened in July 2014 with the introduction of the G:link light rail system. Translink provides an integrated public transport network for the whole of South East Queensland. Surfside buslines under contract from Translink provides high frequency and suburban bus services from the Southport bus station. Buses provide connections to the surrounding suburbs. G:link, also known as the Gold Coast Light Rail, is a light rail system serving the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, and is the sole light rail system in Queensland. The system forms part of the TransLink's South East Queensland public transport network and consists of a single line of nineteen stations. Gold Coast University Hospital (abbreviated GCUH or GCH, and sometimes Gold Coast Uni Hospital) is a major health facility offering tertiary level health care for the Gold Coast, Australia, completed in September 2013. The hospital was built on the Greenfields site adjacent to Griffith University Gold Coast campus at a cost of $1.8 billion. History Construction commenced on 16 December 2008 when Queensland Premier Anna Bligh turned the first sod. The land was previously occupied by a church, a section of the Southport Lawn Cemetery, and undeveloped acreage. Bovis Lend Lease built the hospital. History In October 1887, in the area now known as Ashmore and Benowa, 5 subdivisions comprising the Benowa Estate and Plantation on the Nerang River were advertised to be auctioned by James R. Dickson. A map advertising the auction states the Estate was located 4 miles to Southport bound by a good road on one side and bound by the navigable Nerang River on the other side. Extensive buildings and plant for sugar manufacturing were included in the estate.
