Southern Pacific Railroad
The Southern Pacific (or Espee from the railroad initials- SP) was an American Class I railroad network that existed from 1865 to 1996 and operated largely in the Western United States. The system was operated by various companies under the names Southern Pacific Railroad, Southern Pacific Company and Southern Pacific Transportation Company. The original Southern Pacific began in 1865 as a land holding company. The last incarnation of the Southern Pacific, the Southern Pacific Transportation Company, was founded in 1969 and assumed control of the Southern Pacific system. The Southern Pacific Transportation Company was acquired in 1996 by the Union Pacific Corporation and merged with their Union Pacific Railroad. The Southern Pacific legacy founded hospitals in San Francisco, Tucson, and Houston. Glendale Southern Pacific Railroad Depot
Glendale Transportation Center is an Amtrak and Metrolink rail station in the city of Glendale, California. It is served by the Amtrak ''Pacific Surfliner'' intercity rail route and the Metrolink Ventura County Line and Metrolink Antelope Valley Line commuter rail routes. Amtrak's ''Coast Starlight'' also uses these tracks, but does not stop here. History Originally known as the Glendale Southern Pacific Railroad Depot, it was built by the Southern Pacific Railroad in the California Churrigueresque style of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture in 1923. It had replaced the Atwater Tract Office dating from 1883. The city bought the depot from Southern Pacific in 1989 and acquired adjacent properties to create an intermodal center. Santa Susana Depot
Santa Susana Depot is a train station building located near the Santa Susana Pass in Simi Valley, California. Originally located on Los Angeles Avenue at Tapo Street, the depot opened in 1903. The station was named after the Santa Susana Mountains at the east end of the Simi Valley. The Southern Pacific Railroad used the double-"N" spelling of Susanna on the depot sign facing west, and the single-"N" spelling of Susana on the sign facing east. The Santa Susana Tunnel opened the next year, reducing the distance and transit time between Montalvo and Burbank on the Coast Route linking Los Angeles and San Francisco. San Carlos Station
San Carlos is a Caltrain commuter rail station in San Carlos, California. History The station building was originally built by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1888. For its early history, the Depot was the only public building in San Carlos and functioned as the town's first community church, library, and post office. The structure was retired from railway use in 1967, but '' Del Monte'' and Peninsula Commute trains continued to stop at the station's platforms. The building was subsequently occupied by the San Carlos Chamber of Commerce and a real estate company. The building was vacant when it was acquired by the California Department of Transportation. The Saint Helena Southern Pacific Railroad Depot is a former train station in St. Helena, California. History As European wineries fought a Phylloxera epidemic at the end of the 1800s, Southern Pacific anticipated increased fruit shipments from the Napa wine region and sought to expand their operations in the area. Built to Southern Pacific standard plan No. 18, a two-story combination building, the Saint Helena Depot opened around 1895. The opening of the Napa Valley Electric Railway in 1904 greatly reduced passenger demand, and services ceased in 1929; freight continued to be shipped from the depot. The station building appeared as the fictional Harrington, Vermont train station in the film ''Pollyanna'', shot in 1959. The rail line and depot were formally abandoned by Southern Pacific in 1975, but the right of way was reactivated with the commencement of the Napa Valley Wine Train excursion service. Sacramento Valley Station is an Amtrak railway station in the city of Sacramento, California, at 401 I Street on the corner of Fifth Street. It is the seventh busiest Amtrak station in the country, and the second busiest in the Western United States with thousands of riders a day and over a million passengers per year. Palms-Southern Pacific Railroad Depot is a historic railroad depot built between 1886 and 1888 in what is now the Palms section of Los Angeles, California. The two-story wood depot was originally located at the corner of National Boulevard and Vinton Avenue. In 1928, an “old-timer” told the ''Los Angeles Times'' that decades before the Palms station had been known as “Grasshopper Station” because at the time “grasshoppers were present in veritable clouds.” The Southern Pacific later changed the station's name to “The Palms”, and the surrounding community adopted the name. As one of only two depots on the fifteen-mile route between Los Angeles and Santa Monica (the other being the Ivy station in Culver City), the Palms Depot served as the hub of a growing agricultural community. The Niles Depot Museum is located in the former Southern Pacific Railroad colonnade-style passenger depot built in 1901, and freight depot, located in the Niles District of Fremont, California. The museum is operated by the Niles Depot Historical Foundation and features exhibits and artifacts about area railroads, including the early Southern Pacific Railroad and Western Pacific Railroad, as well as the current Union Pacific Railroad and Amtrak. The Modesto Transportation Center is a bus terminal and former train station located in downtown Modesto, California. History The Central Pacific Railroad was built through Modesto in 1870, and was taken over by the Southern Pacific in 1884. In 1915, the Southern Pacific Railroad built a new Mission Revival-style station. It was used until 1971, when Amtrak took over intercity passenger service. When Amtak restored service to Modesto with the '' San Joaquin'' in 1974, the former Santa Fe station in Riverbank was used instead. (It was replaced with the modern Modesto station in 1999.) The depot was restored in 1993 as a bus terminal. Rail service is expected to be restored by 2024 as part of the Altamont Corridor Express extension to Ceres. Millbrae station is an intermodal transit station serving Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) and Caltrain, located in Millbrae, California. The station is the terminal station for BART on the San Francisco Peninsula, served by two lines: The before 9 pm and the evenings. It is served by all Caltrain service. The station is also served by SamTrans bus service, Commute.org and Caltrain shuttle buses, and other shuttles. Rail service to the area began with 17 Mile House station, which opened in 1864 on land deeded by Darius Ogden Mills; it was renamed Millbrae the next year. The station was rebuilt in 1890 and 1907 after twice burning down. The 1907-built station was threatened with demolition in 1976, but was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
