History Before the Europeans made their claim to the area, the local Native Americans referred to the area as ''Manamooskeagin'', meaning "great green place of shaking grass". History Cohasset was inhabited for thousands of years by Native Americans prior to European colonization, from whom English colonists would adapt the town's name. History The area of Hanover was first inhabited by the local Wampanoag and Massachusett people before Europeans had settled.
