South San Francisco (Caltrain Station)
South San Francisco station is a Caltrain station in South San Francisco, California. The station is on the east side of the Bayshore Freeway (U.S. 101), east and south of the curved Grand Avenue overpass, and north of where the freeway crosses over the tracks. Downtown South San Francisco is to the west, across the freeway. It previously underwent a substantial modernization and expansion project, completed in January 2022. Station layout The station features a single island platform. The main entrance is an underpass that connects the south end of the platform to Grand Avenue and Airport Boulevard on the west and East Grand Avenue and Poletti Way on the east. The west approach, providing direct access to the station from downtown South San Francisco, features a plaza with decorative lighting, and the east approach features an area for shuttle buses to pick up and drop off passengers. South San Francisco is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States, located on the San Francisco Peninsula in the San Francisco Bay Area. The city is colloquially known as "South City". The population was 66,105 at the 2020 census. History Prior to European exploration, the northern San Francisco peninsula was inhabited by the Ramaytush, a linguistic sub-group of the Ohlone people. Their village of Urebure on San Bruno Creek was visited by the Gaspar de Portolà expedition in 1769; remains of long-term (5,000+ years) inhabitancy and seasonal encampments have been examined at the Siplichiquin and Buckeye shell-mounds on San Bruno Mountain. Charcoal-sampling indicates these 3,000+ year old sites may have been actively occupied early in the Spanish colonial period (late 1700s). Caltrain (reporting mark JPBX) is a California commuter rail line serving the San Francisco Peninsula and Santa Clara Valley (Silicon Valley). Gerald A. "Jerry" Hill (born April 18, 1947) is an American politician who served in the California State Senate as a member for the Democratic Party. He represented the 13th Senate District during his time in the California State Senate. Bellarmine Preparatory School is a private, Roman Catholic, coeducational high school run by the USA West Province of the Society of Jesus in Tacoma, Washington, United States. College Park station is a limited-service, weekday-only Caltrain station serving the College Park neighborhood and the Bellarmine College Preparatory school in San Jose, California. Service The station is served by four trains per weekday. In the morning, one northbound train from Gilroy and one local service southbound train from San Francisco serve the station. In the afternoon, one southbound train to Gilroy and one limited-stop northbound train to San Francisco stop at College Park. There is no weekend service. Due to the small size of the station platforms, only the three northern-most cars of each train open their doors to allow passengers to board and alight. Atherton Station
Atherton station is a former Caltrain train station, station in Atherton, California. The station had one side platform and one island platform serving the two tracks of the Peninsula Subdivision (California), Peninsula Subdivision, with a concrete and wooden shelter on the west side of the tracks. The station opened by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1866 as Fair Oaks and was renamed Atherton in 1912. Caltrain cut weekday service to the station in 2005 due to low ridership and a hold-out rule that prohibited two trains from being at the station simultaneously. Broadway station is a Caltrain station in Burlingame, California. Caltrain only serves the stop on weekends and holidays; weekday service is provided by a bus shuttle to nearby Millbrae station. History A station in north Burlingame was opened around 1911, and renamed to Buri Buri in 1917, then Broadway in 1926. The former Southern Pacific Railroad depot building at Broadway still stands and used as a restaurant.
